which frame - decision time - HELP !
« on: January 09, 2004, 03:17:58 PM »
I'm going tomorrow and pick up my first contender.  The question I have is which frame do I get?  The original contenter or the newer G2.  I will use this frame ONLY for bbls in 45/410, 17 hmr, 22 hornet, 223 & 22lr.  I will probably put together a carbine setup as well as the pistol use.  I won't be useing any larger centerfire calibers.  Do I go for the older original frame with its fully adjustable trigger or opt for the newer G2 with fewer trigger adjustments, slightly more weight and a improved re-cocking after letdown feature?  If the older frame has a better potential trigger and I don't need the beefed up G2 because of exclusive small caliber use should I spend the extra $ for the G2.  As I'm new to this game there are surely many sublte differnces I'm unaware of.  Please give me some pros & cons. Thanks - Eddie

The grip angle is different, I would buy the one that feels best to you.  KN

this is only my opinion... i dont think the g2 has been out long enough for all the design problems to be identified and fixed (if there are any).i like to wait until something has a few years under its belt before i sink my pesos into it.  the old frames are a time proven design.  i think it is about perfect for what it was intended.   my two cents says if you have access to an old frame in better shape, go for it.  i also think that if you are considering a g2;  why not go with the encore.  to me they are about the same thing.  just my opinion; enjoy your decision!

honestly, i'll bet the G2 feels so much better. it does to me anyway. i like the G2 extremely well.
the G2 trigger can be fixed fairly easily. i did my own, by tinkering with the factory trigger spring some. it's easy as pie.
only reason i would pick a old model contender over the new G2 contender would be considering they are not made any more, and likely never will be again. if you want one, and the seller has it, get it.
as for the old contender triggers, i can't go internal to fix things. some can, but i can't as of yet. if the trigger doesn't lighten enough by the external adjustment screws, then i have to live with it there.
my G2 now has a trigger pull much better than any old model i have, and it was done by removing the trigger guard, and then carefully pushing the exposed end of the trigger spring down toward the inside of the frame. jeff vicars let me in on that idea, and it works for me very well. all you gotta do is push out a couple little pins to remove the trigger guard, and trigger shoe to get at the factory spring.
since i already have 4 old model frames, if given a choice between the two, i'd take the G2. others views will likely be different, but i'm just giving my honest opinion. :D

Since the grip has changed, pick the one that feels the best.  I have three of the old ones and have never seen a new one myself.

Now if you are going to make a carbine out of it, you might want to consider the carbine stock, the G2 looks much nicer to me.  But there is a way around that also, I just bought a walnut Encore shaped stock but inletted for a Contender and it was only $40 in semi finished form.  So I am back to buy which ever one feels the best in pistol form.

I'll toss my opinion in too, although it is biased as everybody here knows.   I'd opt for the original frame of the easy open vintage (after serial number 195,000 in the blue - all original stainless were easy open).   To touch on some of your points...

Triggers... all of my frames are 1 1/2 pounds or less with no creep, a couple as low as 6 ounces.   So the older triggers can be made whatever you want them to be, and safely despite what TC (or the Schwarzenegger Republik) thinks.

Weight... I guess a matter of personal choice.   None of your planned barrels require any extra "beef", so the original will be your lightest option.  Not important for something you will shoot off the bench, but it will be for carrying in the field all day and shooting balance off-hand.   Encore frame is about a full pound heavier than a "C" frame.

Cost... very good to LNIB old models can be found for under $200, sometimes well under that amount.   Compare that to buying a new G2 or even a used Encore frame.

Carbine use... again lighter, and shorter with factory barrels so easier to swing and carry.   Composite or factory wood easy to find cheap - lots of options custom if you want nicer wood and these also often available used for more savings (not so the G2 on later point).

I also agree the original has proved and improved itself since 1967 - been using them myself since about 1969-70.   TC without a doubt has lost much of the quality control they started out with - I know the last version of the "C" frames left a lot to be desired - expect the same from the G2 (especially since they really never even wanted to produce it but finally yielded to public pressure - but that another story and I won't go there).   Tons of parts and accessories for the "C's" have been produced over the 33-34 years that they were made, and so can usually be found for a good price used and with lots of selection.   Not much available for the G2 yet, and so probably very few options being offered used for some time to come.

The recock thing after letting the hammer down was memtioned concerning the G2.   Well, it can also be done very simply with the original frames also, and without opening the barrel to do so.   So is not a factor.

Although your chosen barrels will not have the recoil to require it, you may find as I have, that the original frames are quite comfortable with the Pachmayr Decelerator or Gripper grips on it (but hate their Presentation) ... don't believe Pachy is making them for the G2 since they also are not making them for the Encore (and heard they never plan to BTW).   Grip angle of the old frames I guess I am so used to after all these years that the G2's would be the odd man out for me.   But as a new user, it is something to consider I guess.

Guess I also better add the required warning... you're only fooling yourself if you think those are the only barrels that you'll ever have for your TC!

Still remember when I told the new wife about 1969 that I just wanted to try one Contender frame and barrel to see if I liked them...   adding the dollars spent between all the factory barrels and frames, custom barrels, wood, accessories and reloading dies for them owned over the years, bet I could just about walk in today and pay cash for the top dog pickup of all pick em ups, and have enough left over for gas to drive the Alaskan Highway both ways several times.   Hmmmm?  Maybe THATS what that divorce was really about 17months ago

Oh well, at least I can have all I want now (and have replaced her with about a new toy a month since)   Think they call that - priorities!

Whatever you do decide to do pard, enjoy your "new" TC and welcome to the brotherhood.

Real easy Dave.... just give a slight squeeze on the trigger guard spur, release and recock the hammer.     It's just like you are going to open the action, only not anywhere near as much pressure on, or travel of the trigger guard.   Hook a finger on the very bottom of the trigger guard spur for leverage, or do it with your off hand.   Try it a few times and you'll get the idea how much to "squeeze" without having the action come open.     Don't even have to shift your grip on the TC to do this in a hunting situation - can recock with thumb of either hand.

Okay, Okay... I lied KYODE!!!   When I really tought about it, the constant flow of R/W/B boxes and visits from the brown truck around here - it just didn't sound like enough.   May have missed something, but...

7 TC barrels
6 TC custom barrels
2 SAA pistols w/CAS leather
3 rifles w/scopes
1 custom rifle
6 blackpowder rifles
1 blackpowder custom target pistol
(all the accrutiments & casting equipment for BP)
(dies, brass and bullets, cases, etc for those that needed them)

So just counting the things with barrels... that's 1.5294117 toys a month since Genesis.    :)

Guess I better get with it... told her I'd have twice the life without her.

So...... who's got something to sell/trade?
