FINALLY! Got my 30-30 to shoot decent groups!
« on: October 10, 2011, 08:44:03 PM »
It did two three shot groups that went under two inches for 100 yards, might have done better with a better trigger and a scope that has a bit more ooomph than my 1-3/4-5.  I've worked on both the rifle and load for over a month, man it feels good when a plan comes together.  Load consisted of CCI 200's, 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips seated just off the lands, thirty six grains of LVR, chrono's just over 2300 fps.  This ought to do me proud nest month when deer season opens!

Sounds good.  Best of luck hunting.  I'm just about ready to dive into my .30-30s too.  I'm going to load the FTXs over LVR for my 336 and try a 165 gr. Boat tail ballistic tip in the Handi.  If they don't work out, I'll fall back to a traditional FP.  I bought the 165s for my .308, but thought to give them a try in the .30-30 Handi  From what I read, there's not too much to gain from the pointed bullet and expansion suffers at the lower velocity.  We'll see.

I got mt 30-30 handi just for the reason of the pointed bullet advantage. For instance the 130 hornady sp has a BC of .295(NOSLER BT even higher). The flat nose bullets are under .200. I load my 130 bullets at 2400 ft second and get more energy at 200 yards then does with factory 150 and 170 ammo and with less recoil and flatter shooting. Would go with the ballistic tips but I am to cheap but cabelas has them on sale so I might be trying some.

And I checked with hornady and that bullet will expand down to 1600 ft second which it is still carrying to 250 yards which will be about 100 yards past any realistic shot I will take in the PA woods.

Yep, I'm shooting 180 btsp in 30-40 Krag and 7.5x55 swiss and checked with hornady.  Rep stated that 1600 is fine on the terminal end.  ;)
