Concealed Carry in Church?!?
« on: October 11, 2011, 05:42:04 AM »
I was curious who out there carries a gun when they go to church.  I know I do and at least one more guy in church does.  I also have a brother that wears one to his and a friend down south who does.  Just curious.   ;D

Well the only way someone will know you are carrying will be if it becomes necessary.  So when people know you have a gun it is always justified  :o

I find it totally necessary. I'm so decrepit that a 10yo could whip me. my gun makes me a little more equal to the bad guys.

I don't go to church, but if I did I'd carry.  It's about as dangerous of a place as it gets.

There is no need for anyone but me to know how much money I have in my pocket, or if I'm packing a gun.

To answer your question, yes I do! And that applies to any other place that has not posted a legal notice restricting carry on their premises

Here in Missouri it's only legal with the Pastor's, or someone in charge, permission. There has been many shootings inside churches so I see no reason not to be prepared. I carry everywhere 24/7, including at home. When not allowed, the 9mm may, or may not, come off my belt but the .32 is always left in a pocket hoslter and in my pocket except where I'm likely to be searched or go through a metal detector, such as an airport. The trouble with "No Firearms Allowed" signs and places you aren't suppose to carry is that bad guys could care less about the law and will be armed anyways.  I prefer not to find myself needing and not having.

Me too, but I make it a point to let the business know why I'm spending my money elsewhere. Not always, but sometimes it opens their eyes to logic.

There is a business in my parents town with no guns allowed sign on the door.  My mother asked the clerk in the store if they have a lot of problems.  The clerk did not even know what she was talking about.  Must have just had some left wing boss.

So here is a question, is it legal to even have that sign up if a law doesn't back it up?  The second amendment is more important than that piece of paper you printed out.

That question has come up in Missouri. Technicaly they realy don't have the right if you are legaly carrying. However, a landowner, or business owner, does have the right to refuse your being on their property, without reason at all, as long as you aren't LE, an emergency worker or someone who's posistion within the law overrides their right. Thus they can refuse you access, because you are carring, and not really have to give a reason why. Therefore Missouri law says no carrying on public or private property where posted.

Church congregations are made up of imperfect humans just like the rest of society so I guess that it is no surprise that some "fleecing" and "adultery" takes place in some of them.  However, to contend that it "happens all the time" or in every church is a little far fetched.

Besides, I think if you did a little research you would find that most of the crimes and attacks that have taken place in churches were committed by individuals outside of the church.

something to consider when carrying in church...

MANY churches these days have VERY proactive security plans in place that include armed, plain clothese personnel (off duty police that are members of the congregation and/or hired security/off duty cops) sprinkled throughout the facility.

Acts of violence against religious groups and churches have risen sharply over the past decade.. In response numerous churches have gotten much more serious about protecting their pastors, their congregations, and their facilities..

If you choose to go armed in church.. it probably behooves you to find out as much as you can about the churches security program (as much as they are willing to tell you about), or even consider become part of their security program..

If you choose not to let anyone know you are carrying.. I would make absolutely certain that no one EVER sees your weapon.. or it is possible YOU might be seen as a threat and have an encounter you otherwise didnt prepare for..

If an attack goes down in church.. I would recommend being VERY careful about your response.. again.. if you dont know the churches response plan, or their security profile, if your weapon comes out it is very possible that YOU are going to be percieved as part of the threat, not part of the solution.. and will be engaged by the "good guys"..

compare this to being a parent picking up a child at school when an "active shooter" situation goes down.. you pull out your weapon and rush inside to save your kid... 5 minutes later the first law enforcement officers show up, enter the building, and the first person they see with a gun is YOU.. what do you think their immediate response is going to be?

Not saying you dont go in and try to save lives..

I am saying you need to understand things beyond "Im going to defend myself and my family/friends/whoever" in an active shooter situation..

Even if the security team in the church knows you (small congregation, you are a regular, etc..) if they dont know you are armed, and dont know your intention when a moment of stress goes down.. the end result could not only be detremental to you, but you could actually slow down or totally inhibit their ability to respond to the actual threat..

again... not saying to go unarmed to church.. I ADVOCATE you being armed if your state law and your church allow it..

what I am saying, as someone that has trained the protective services detail at one of the largest southern baptist churches in the country, and as someone that helped design the security program for one of the largest presbyterian churches in the south east.. that the typical convienience store or street corner response to a deadly force threat is likely a very bad idea in a church where it is PROBABLE these days that there is a response plan in place, and people in the building already that are dedicated to stoping/eliminating threats as they present themselves..

dont find yourself accidently percieved as part of the threat..

Around here you have to have permission from the Church, which as mdwest posted is a good idea.  In our Church the pastor would welcome the inquiry.  I don't know of any he has turned down, but he just might if you weren't mature and established enough.  Of course, after he and other men evaluated you, you might be asked to be a part of our security plans depending on your background and training.  We have several current and retired LEO and military that currently serve in that role.

It is the law, yes.  And as mdwest said, it's a good idea to at least let the church leadership know you are carrying given the shootings that have happened in churches and the measures that some churches have put in place to handle those situations.

The only places I WONT carry are places that are off limits by law. Post office, Court, Government buildings, or any place of that nature, or that have a "NO GUNS" sign. Though the latter I avoid when possible. I carry into gunshops, there is ONE around here that has a sign saying no loaded guns, not even carry weapons, but I no longer visit that shop, due to an OVERLY pushy salesman who is a wanna be know it all. Too bad, they have a lot of cool stuff, but their prices are always on the high side, so I am better off going elsewhere.

My girlfriend, at first, was really nervous when I started carrying. I then asked if she would rather us get robbed or shot or what not, or me be able to protect us. She didn't think long about that. She pretty much knows that I have my NAA .22mag on me 99% of the time. Its not much, but its better than my fists.
