Drilling & Tapping Shotgun Barrel
« on: October 11, 2011, 06:09:36 PM »
Hey there:

Have a plain ole vanilla 20 ga. smoothbore, and would like to scope it. I already see/know that a smoothie can shoot the slugs it likes very, very good. Now, that being said; I could/can do lots better with a scope on the barrel. I see that the standard base is 3 holes, and I don't see any problem drilling and tapping.

Just would like some of you to chime in your thoughts and/or experiences on this type of project. I have drilled and tapped S&W pistols, I have never lost a scope on them. One scope got destroyed, but the mounts, etc. were not at fault. The big Smith recoil got the scope.

Best,

There was a good bit of discussion on this very thing in the not too distant past; I just cant remember under what topic to get you a reference (but it is in the past pages, for sure). Hopefully somebody will have it and chime in.
IIRC, the 20 has enough meat around the chamber to do it with no worries (the 12 gets 'iffy' and some g'smiths wont do it) On a kicker I would use #8 screws rather tha #6s, and the 3 hole base should be fine, but with it all jigged up and all maybe its not much extra trouble for you to do 4 holes.
FWIW, I think a small, light, low power scope or a reddot should be dandy.

I just finished drilling & tapping my 20 ga. I had to cut the screws I had as they were to long. I used a piece of scrap metal, drilled and tapped it for the screw and ground the screw to the proper length. With it screwed into this metal plate it was easy to hold and grind as well as when it was backed out the threads were good enough to start easily into the barrel.

I used #6 screws ( what I had on hand) but if I was to do it again I would go with #8.

Not sure but I think I went .140 deep with the holes and used a bottoming tap.
My remember'er is broke, but my forgetter is getting better.

My gunsmith did the 20 ga. pardner barrel with no problem. Now wears a Bushnell Banner scope, 1x4 very good for Ohio deer season.

I forgot to set the depth-stop on my drill press and ruined the barrel.

the hole can always be welded up and redone.  Barrel certainly isn't ruined.

Because you drilled down into the chamber?

Did this to one when I was legally blind! :( "Paco" Kelly 8) was kind and patient enough to write and tell me it could be salvaged bythreading and putting short socket set screws in it flush with the chamber and applying some jb metal-weld inside the chamber and smoothing up. Even took the time to x-plain to dis dumbass that the reason for the short screws were so there would still be room for  scope mount screws. :)
