Mouflon price
« on: October 11, 2011, 06:10:56 PM »
Since my daughter killed a mouflon last year I have noticed that many of the ranches have increased the price of harvesting a mouflon significantly.  I wonder what is making the price jump?

No clue....maybe it's supply and demand???  Or maybe the owners are looking at the websites for the big ranches like the YO and 777 where the prices are astronomical.

How much has the cost increased?   Economy perhaps?  Trying to make a few extra $ to make up for other losses?  Where have you looked?  Curious if it is something happening nationwide, or is a local phenom.

:)  Howdy! Just a thought. A Mouflon resembles the Big Horn Sheep and Stone Sheep to some extent. Big Horn, Stone, and Dall are extremely high dollar hunts in most cases. A trophy Mouflon would be far less expensive than any of the wild sheep hunts. Always, Gene

I also have to ask...are we talking about pure mouflon or corsican-mouflon crosses??  And...how much of a price jump and where?  what's the trophy quality???

Let's see:
Wildlife systems TX  $2,700,  YO Ranch TX 2,500,  777 Ranch TX  2,500-3,500,  Tioga PA 1,000+, TX Hunt Lodge, TX 2,950,

In my area they jumped about $300 since last year while other animals (corsican, merino, etc) raised less than $100.   I'm sure it has to do with supply and demand I'm just curious as to the who and what of this supply and demand.  drdougrx...The mouflon my daughter shot was dark in color so I'm guessing it was pure (I would think that corsican mix would result in large white patches).

Just the opposite really. The white saddle patch and very small tail are traits of pure strain muflon and it is from them in the mix that some corsicans get theirs. Not many (if any) pure muflon are available in the US most all are mixed and I've seen some that had almost no wild appearance of muflon to them other than the horns. I've seen corsican that except for the wide outsweeping horns looked almost a dead ringer for a wild muflon.

Right on GB!  Look up the website for the Von Neitzer Ranch in Fredricksburg TX.  Garrett raises pure breds for hunting.  My pure bred was shot at the the Prieor Ranch in Ingram TX....I paid $1,700 in 2000.

I have shot two rams, a 36 inch corsican and a 36.5 inch Black Hawaiian at the VonNetzer's.
They are the best outfitter I have ever hunted with.  I am wanting to do a third ram in the near future.  His prices are based on inches.  He has several breeds to shoot.

The black Hawaiianin my avatar was shot on VNR.

You can start a herd of mouflon for under a thousand dollars those prices are ridiculous. My stepfather used to raise them in the 80s and sell rams for less than 100 dollars.

They roam wild on my place, mostly mixed breeds, but there were a few rams last year that I figure should be about right horn wise this year. So far only seeing ewes and some billy goat types.

Well pure mouflon are becoming very rare because they will inner breed with just about any other sheep. Mouflon must be kept seperate or as the only sheep species on the ranch to ensure purity. I agree the prices have become outrageous but I have a big herd so I can keep my prices considerably lower. Also when we purchased ours was 10 years ago when there were many more pure mouflon availble and cost wasnt as high.

Sideline. Move this post please if it breaks the Rules.
Question:
I've had Mountain Goat meat to eat and it was delicious. I've also heard that some other goats are not near as good.
Recently I asked a Preserve  via e-mail about this and they never bothered to answer.
OK, so are those "others" good enough to put on the table?

I've only eaten goat meat once but that was some mighty fine eating and I went back for seconds. It was a domestic goat but there is darn little difference between the catalina goats at preserves and the run of the mill barn yard goat.

Sheep aren't goats and I don't eat sheep meat period. I sure wouldn't turn down goat meat tho.

Welcome Aoudad hunter!  I shot a 32" ram up in Sanderson,Tx back in 2007. My outfitter drove us over there. Big aoudad are awesome, but stink! ha.
Only way I could eat sheep meat is to have been born a Bedouin or trying to survive! ha. I prefer a young goat if I have BBQ in mind. I was fed some "so called" Cabrito in Freer once...the more I chewed it, the bigger it got and it tasted nasty! I tried to discreetly feed it the hounds, and "they" wouldn't eat it either! ha
