« on: October 11, 2011, 06:58:47 PM »
I'm thinking of cutting down my Encore 209 x 50 to 17" or 18"
do you think this would be to short of a barrel to shoot 125yards
or less i just think this would make a nice tree stand deer gun
what do you think

Once you cut that barrel, its cut forever, Plus you have the money for cutting and recrowning the barrel.  Thompson makes a 20 inch barrel.  They come up used here and other places from time to time.  If it were me, I'd buy a used 20 inch factory barrel.  Try it out and sell the other if I liked the 20 inch better.  If not the 20 inch barrels are easy to sell if you don't like it.

It would make a nice pistol barrel for you.  I shoot a 15" 209x50 and never tried it at 100yds or so but I am sure it would do fine for you. At 50 yards it shoots very well.

I bought a 20 inch barrel last year and all though have not shot anything with it, it shoots great. It pulls up
very easy and looks cool(imo). Shoots great groups at 50 yds. and I'm getting some Black Horn 209 to try.
I also have a Endeavor barrel but that Katahdin looks pretty neat.

I Had an extra 209x45 for the G2 that I cut to 14 inches made a forend and put it on a contender frame with a scope and at 60 yrds with a 225 powerbelt and 50 grns of tripple 7 it shoots great and holds a good group at least for me and is a fun gun to shoot. If you look around at gun shows you can find 15 inch 209x50 for the encore and they even show up here from time to time.

BTW - I just benched her at 50 yards Tuesday and off a bag she shot a 7 shot group about the size of a raquet ball using iron sights with a rear peep sight. 300 grain XTP over 85 grains of Goex black powder. It has a lot of recoil with the 300's so I changed to T/C cheap shot 240? lead bullets and the pistol shot very nice with a lot less recoil and the impact was the same.

I shortened my Encore 209x50 to 20 inches. It still shoots a 325gr leverevolution 458 slug @ 1700fps and will group 3 inches @ 200yds. I did mine myself. The ramrod is supported by 2 furrules and you lose the outer one when you shorten the barrel. You also have to cut and rethread the ramrod for the new length. My gun is really short now and I wouldn't go any shorter than 20" or you'll have to relocate the last remaining ramrod ferrule. I obviously lost that freebore barrel section that's designed for starting bullets but it didn't seem to make any difference.

I have a 17 inch Encore 209x50 barrel that I use as  a pistol barrel, using 80 gr of T7 and a 250 gr shockwave It will group about an inch at 50yards and under 2 inches at 100. Plus I can still use it as a rifle barrel.
