Those funky looking Handi-grips question
« on: October 13, 2011, 06:34:13 PM »
Ok they have been out long enough that there should be some thoughts on them.

I really cant get over the angle of the cheek rest on those, every time I see one listed on a site it reminds me to ask this question .

So whats the verdict guys ?

 Thanks DR

Well for me the cheekrest needs to be a hair higher. But I like the way the rest of it fits. The grip gives me control. The length is good. I have one on my .223 and getting one for my Maxi. They are not as pretty as the wood, but I take my guns to the woods not the range show ;)

I have a handi grip stock on my 357 shortie. For me its perfect,  I shoot left handed and it feels good in my hand and I have a reddot sight mounted scout style on the barrel and its the right heigth.

I got one on my rifled Tracker 20ga and one on a .223. I thought they was ugly as sin when I first saw them but they function better than the Survivor and work and fit well for my use. I built 2 20's for my brother and his son put one of the grips on one and a youth monte carlo syn. on the other he called the other day and wants another of the grips for the boy.Kurt

I've handled one just for the feel. I didn't care for the long reach for the hammer, I mean it's a long way for my stubby thumb to get up to there too cock the hammer.
I spose for those that have learned shooting in the military or have a long background with black guns that style of grip is what their used too.
The ergonomics behind the grip is meant for comfort and control of extended firing and/or heavier recoil.

Because I've been shooting for over 40yrs now, standard rifle stock configurations are quite natural for me. I guess I'd consider that type of stock/grip style if I had a heavy recoil gun or something that would be considered a bench type where form and technique of hold is needed to squeeze every X out of the group. I'm all for all the accuracy I can get out of any gun, but I don't think the Handi grip is going to help me get anything more than what I have.
I'm quite content with olde school wood, the Monte Carlo and Pistol grips they have work just fine.

Others milage may vary,,

I like mine and actually bought three sets so I could get the forends from two others!  Sold the two stocks w/o any problems, they snatched right up when offered for sale.

I need one more set, when I get around to it.

Most important thing I could say is that I'm putting together a 'versa-quad pak,' with a .22LR barrel, .233Rem bbl, .30/06 bbl and a 22" 12gagger barrel.

When I've put other shotgun barrels on that same same receiver with my Handi-Grip stock, position of the cheek piece and LOP 'felt right' handling, hefting, pointing it like one would shooting a shotgun and the sight plane was "right there!"

Plus the gun/receiver fits well when sighting scoped barrel with that stock.

For me, any serious complaints are much a-do about nothing!  Anybody that has a Handi-Gripper they don't like can send me theirs -  ;D    I promise to give it a good home!!   ;)

I also have three sets.. two are on the shelf...

I love the feel but I also feel that the comb to too low. Heck I could use them with open sites!!!

But the grip feels very nice in my hand and the thumb hole is very large making manipulation of the hammer easy and completely ambidextrous.

Over all I like the stock... I also like good ergonomics and proper cheek weld...

Yeah Tim I missed it, I was figuring it had probably been touched on , I recall comments when the first images started to surface a while back .. Curiousity and poor searching skills strike again ::)

See that was what I was seeing there C dub.. I play with too much long range and that low comb with the usual high mount rings the handis are known for needing just didnt compute i.e. the question.
I did enjoy the survivor stock , the extra control of the pistol grip and the light wt., cheek weld was perfect for me .

I guess when I get one in hand I'll know how it lines up for me.

Much thanks guys, As always everyone of you rock     DR

Sorry, all I have is a wood-stocked .45-70 Handi-Rifle.  What's a funky Handi-grip look like?   ???

Got one of them and as a southpaw I just love it. Since it is on a 45-70 I had the wife make me up a bag that fits the hollow and filled it up with sand for a bit of extra recoil reducing agent. ;D
What is the point of Life if you can't have fun.

I've seen pictures of cheek rests added to guns, made from heavy walled PVC pipe and from high density foam that add height to the stock.

Since this is a synthetic stock, wouldn't look too bad.  I think I'd try it if I had one.

I do have a velcro on type, that is adjustable by adding pads. Just not tryed it on this one yet.
On the wood stocks that are going to be painted, I have added a piece of wood and bondo. But don't think that would work on this type. Will attach photo of the Marlin 60 stock I modified ;)
