We got snow
« on: October 16, 2011, 10:09:46 AM »
First snow of the season that stuck.  Looked out this morning aned everything is white.  Only about 1/2", but it's everywhere.  This one will probably stay with us till spring, just have more and more on top.  Hopefully no more rain, like we had last year.

Took the little Chevy S-10 out to the grocery and it's slick.  Needed 4-wheel drive to get out of the driveway.  Can tell we got a new batch of drivers, cars and trucks off the road everywhere.  It's three miles to the grocery, one mile of mixed gravel and paved streets to the state highway.  4 lane interstate type highway.  Then two miles of highway to the store, that's where people were off the road.  The roadbed is elevated due to overpasses, that's what got them, going up the incline to the highway.  Lots of folks going to miss church today.

Sky had a study group at the University today.  He took my Miata, since it now has studded snow tires.  The Miata is the only vehicle I bothered putting studs on this year, since all the rest have 4-wheel drive.  (The RX-8 and the Eclipse are pickled and parked for the winter).  He called home when he got there, told his Mom he had no trouble.  Roads were slick, but he held his speed down and went along just fine.

Calling for more snow tonight.  Things will be interesting Monday morning.  Glad I won't be going into town till after the rush hour.  I'll get to see the underside of a few vehicles, and tow trucks pulling them back onto their wheels.  Other vehicles several yards off the road, due to going too fast.  Tow trucks will be collecting them too.

Sourdough - I'm surprised that you use the Miata in snow.  I put mine away at the first sign of snow, usually at the end of October.  Great car fun to drive, but not my idea of a car to use in the white stuff, especially with the top down. ;D

Sourdough, guess you don't want to hear that it was 80* and sunny here in south central NC today.   Our daughter went to the state fair with friends so the wife and I decided to take the canoe out for a nice leisurely paddle on Falls Lake.  Leaves are just starting to turn and should be really nice by next weekend.  8)

p.s.; Enjoy your snow.  ;D

It was 83 here today, pretty dry though. I would think that Alaskans would be great drivers, here I can understand stupidity and bad driving. Every winter some with 4wd think they are Gods gift to the roads and drive 70+ on ice and snow. A cop tried to catch one lastwinter but couldn't drive that fast. No substitute for stupid. Powderman:  All those vehicles on the side of the road are usually young GIs and spouses on their first winter.  Many have never driven on snow before.  Some have never even seen snow before.  They get educated fast.

OldSchoolRanger:  The wife drives a Mazda RX-8, she parked it a week ago, till spring.  The Miata is new to me, I just bought it this spring.  I know several people up here that drive Miatas all winter.  My first three vehicles up here were all rear wheel drive so why not drive the little Miata.  All our 4X4s are rear wheel drive when the 4 wheel drive is disengaged which is 90% of the time during the winter.  In fact for most of the winter all the highways will be clear of ice and snow for the most part.  Only the side roads and residential streets will have snow pack on them.  Don't need 4 wheel drive for that type of driving.

During the winter the wife drives a 2002 Kia Sportage, Son drives a 2003 Chevy S-10, I drive a 2004 F-350, and this winter I will also be driving the Mazda Miata.

OOOps, made the wrong post her so I deleated it.  Now for what I should have put here.
We got another two inches today.  Wet slick stuff.  About 9 I drove into town.  Surprised, no rollovers, just a few off the road.  Lots of slush.  The little Miata did good.  Got a little tricky when doing a lane change through heavy slush at 55mph, but not bad.  On the hardpack on my street, and in the parking lot, those studs really do bite.

Got warm last night, above freezing.  Then it sleeted this morning.  Porch is covered in ice, almost bought it as I went out for the paper.  They are calling for three inches tonight and tomorrow.  Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

A friend that works with my wife has a 16 year old daughter.  I offered to teach her to drive a standard transmission this summer.  No she (the girl) was too busy.  The Father (Parents are divorced) gave her a Suzuki Sidekick.  Very clean little 4X4 with a five speed transmission.  He gave the girl a very rudimentry course on shifting over the weekend, and turned her loose, sending her back to Mama's house.  Monday morning as young girl was driving to school, she made a shift and lost control of the car.  Off the road, and over she went.  Between the snow and the fact she went off the road into a hay field, the only damage was the drivers side mirror.  The Mom now wants me to give driving lesions.  Young lady is grounded and riding school bus till after skid pad training.  I may deligate this one down to Sky.  He's sort of on my bad list anyway at this time.

Wife wants the snow blower fixed before I leave for Florida.  She is afraid we might get another big snow, more than a plow will handle.  I prefer the plow, it's much faster.  But since I won't be here, what ever she wants.
