Another 45-70 comparison?

I'm a newbie here, be gentle, and thank you for your imput.

I'm a Trad. bowhunter. I made my 1st trip to Africa for plains game in 2001. I hope to go back in 2004. I also enjoy shooting big bore handguns.
When I go back I'd like to hunt with my bow, Freedom Arms casull and a rifle.
I've be considering a Ruger 1 in either .45-70 or .416 Rigby.

The trip would be for plains game, and I really don't see myself hunting out past 100yrds.

How do these two cal. rounds compare?

  gREETINGS BOSS!!!!!.  One of the guys at my shooting club got back last month from africa also.  He was using a .480 Ruger,and his friend was using the .454 casull.  Everyone agreed that the casull was first in line for the game that they were hunting,(all plains game).  The rifle that you are talking about will do what you want it to within reason.  The .45-70 is a good choice with the proper bullets (I have a tendency to think cast 500+grainers cause thats all I shoot).  I would think that if they will go through a bison,they should take care of anything up to that size (not cape buff).  For some reason I think u are interested in the plains game,so they will not be a problem.  The .416 is going to give ya more kick (as in lots) over the .45-70 and there are more bullets heads to choose from.  If I was going to go,I would take my longbow in 100# mode,and my 32" arrows,and one of my many big game rifles that only shoot target.  I dont think the .45-70 would be a problem out to 150 yards.  Good luck to ya.  By the way.  That 100# er is good for about 4 shots,and my arm and hand gives out.    LOVE LONGBOWS;;;king

King - With that 100bow you could handle anything up to a Cape Buff, this is if your'tre willing to set up to 15 yrds. :^)

I took a wildebeest & a Kudu with a 70# recurve amd got pass throughs on both.

I recently trade two of my Rugers in .44 mag for that Freedom arms Casull. I really like it.

I must admit I'm partical to rounds that start with "4".  I'm looking for that "Magic Cal." My hunting passions lean toward big animals. Of course I could buy several rifles but, then I couldn't afford to travel.  I'm under the impression that I could shoot a load from the 45-70 that would be on par with the .416?  Another concern is locating Ammo on the road if that need arose. In RSA finding .416 wouldn't be a problem but how about Alaska? Or vise versa?

BTW - one of my goals  IS a Cape with my recurve. :^)

  BOSS !!!!!   Man,aim i proud to know another bow hunter.,and ya not be shooting one of those passing fad type ones with the wheels and all either.  I have been shooting a longbow since I was 5 yrs old.  All of the guys I hunt with use em except for two,and they will have one next year.  The heavy bow is from the days when I was a power lifter.  I did it for almost 16 yrs,and could handle that beast with ease,but,now its a little heavy if I have not been shooting much.  I havve one that was 96 at 70 inches length until a tip got broke,I had to cut 1 1/2 inches off of each end,now it pulls I dont know how much.  I just know when I can get it back,that arrow looks like a bullet heading toward the target.  I now shoot a 55,64,and a 74 at 28inches,and my draw length is 32 inches.  Well,at least thats where I end up at cause I anchor just behind my ear.  I would love to hear about that hunt in africa sometime.   Im not susre how heavy you can go with the .45-70,cause I only load with black powder,and one of these days I will shoot good enough fer some of the steel game type critters.  I do have a .50-140-700 that is interesting to touch the trigger on.   I think its great that ya hunt with that recurve over there.  One of these days,maybe..im gunna try it to.   Stay safe   king
