Shoulda bought a Handi

I went to a local gun show this weekend.  There was only one Handi and a small handful of Topper and Pardner shotguns in the whole place.  The Handi was a Gardner New in Box .30-30, low comb  synthetic with open sights....240 out the door.  I bought powder from this dealer, and never thought to buy the rifle until the show was over and I was home.  Never got the dealer's name either.  A classic case of hindsight :(   I've got enough .30-30s, but I'm sure someone here could have used it.

The guns that attracted the most attention and sold were the Rossi Circuit Judge, the CVA Scout and the Hi Point .40S&W carbine.  For 150 bucks, I imagine the .40 would be fun.  I'll have to admit the Scout was nice handling as was the Rossi.  The T/C style stock on the Rossi turned me off.  I think they are butt ugly.  Personally, I wouldn't own either.  The more imports we buy, the more Americans are out of work.

Kevin Erickson, a superb handgun shooter and the Luce County, MI Sheriff was there.  We talked a while about about Rossi/Taurus and H&R quality and CS and imports in general.   He said he had a Taurus revolver that wouldn't group.  He sent it back.  NINE MONTHS later it came back with a new barrel......still wouldn't group.  He dumped it.  They use some Handis in their youth programs and they're happy with the quality and CS.  Good to hear.

Heading myself to a WA state gunshow next week.  How good are the Hi Point carbines?  I realize there are 'better' weapons for home defense, but compared to the proverbial sharp stick (and other cheap guns)  How well would the Hi Point do in a stress situation?  If using Glock mags and a G19 or G23 as backup?  THANKS!

I don't have much experience with a highpoint, but I do know they are not well made at all for what they cost new. If you can find one a kel Tec sub 2000 is not but $30 to $40 more new and is a well made accurate gun.... Can be had in a model that uses glock mags too(most common). Mine is one of my favorites, its a favorite of my range buddies too, I have a list of people who want to buy it if I ever decide to sell. Only bad thing about the gun is kel Tec only makes them sporadically, a dealer I know said none have been made for close to 2 years now.

I have both the High Point .45 pistol and carbine.  Heavy, but reliable.  Easy to operate, and easy to handle, and shoot.  Shoots where you point it, and neither has had a FTF.  The pistol is too heavy for Concealed Carry, but sits on the night stand well for home protection.  The Carbine is too heavy for hunting, but sits in the corner well.  Also for home protection.  That's what I bought them for, and they fit the need.  Always ready at a moments notice.  They both use the same magazine.

  The High Point Carbines are good weapons. A friend of mine owns a sporting goods store, and sells a bunch of them. The only complainant he gets is when someone breaks it down and can't get it back together.
  I agree the Kel-Tec is a better quality weapon, but they are scarce as hen's teeth right now. I was going to get a HP Carbine for my wife as a home defense gun, but lucked into a Marlin Camp 9 for $125.00.
  It's all about what you can afford. If you can swing the money for an AR, more power to you. Most people these days can't, and the HP Carbine's are reliable and fit into a regular person's budget without the need for liberal amounts of lubricant...

I picked up a 9mm HighPoint Carbine a couple years ago. (dad got it for my birthday) Have about 1500 rounds through it, and it hasn't missed a beat. Surprisingly accurate for the price, about 2MOA at 50y with the stock iron sights. It loves MB SmallBall with 6.0g of blue dot.

The gun shows in NW ohio never seem to have new Handis.  They usually have a lot of used H&R/NEF shotguns and a few used Handi CF rifles.  The asking prices are always well over list price for a new Handi?!?! :o   I guess they just like folks looking at them and don't really care if they sell one or not.

I have a high point 9mm and really do like it. It was cheap and it shoots well. I would buy another in a second.
