What is the ultimate combo gun combination?
« on: October 17, 2011, 10:44:43 AM »
If you where looking for a combination gun, one gun to do it all.  What shotgun gauge and rifle caliber would you go with?

thanks

DougK,

For my use a 16 or 20ga shotgun along with a 25 to 7mm rimed cartridge.  :o

I am looking at "MY" ultimate combo, it is an Italian 12/7x65R made by Renato Gamba for Wischo of West Germany I believe about10-15 years old. The 12 has screw in chokes, has a set trigger for rifle barrel, EAW quick detach scope base and rings, with a Leupold
1.75X6 with heavy duplex, and a rail on scope for mounting my LED light for night use. I basically only varmit hunt, (hogs, coyotes, cats, and coons). The rifle is sighted dead on for 80 yds, (the distance to the hog feeder). I can use this for all of the hunting I do except dove season(have to have more than one shot for those little missles).
My second "ultimate" is a V. Bernardelli set up almost exactly as the Wischo except it is 12/5.6x50r. It has a Mueller Multishot 2x7 scope with illum 1" dot. I use it mostly for night vartmit callling. I use only 53 gr Barnes copper  and I do use it on hogs some as well and find the Barnes to be extremely reliable on head and neck shots. I intend to get a 22 Mag insert for the Bernardelli to have a perfect squirrel and small game gun. Reloading for both has been relatively easy, they do not seem to be very picky.
I would use the 7x65r for anything in N. A. except the big bears. The 5.6x50r is also very versatile, It is very accurate with slugs.
I find the combos almost perfect for my type of hunting, I have basically emptied the safe except for my 1A ruger, the combos, and some self defense handguns.  :)

A Savage 24 in .30-30/20 ga.  With reloading,  the .30-30 will work for almost everything from mice to moose.  If you stick to factory ammo, the .30-30 won't hurt your wallet too much either.  The older 24V is noticeably lighter than the most recent model, but lacks the screw-in chokes.  The .222 or .223/20 ga. is also a good choice althougt the rifle barrel is a little light for deer and .223 ammo is inexpensive.

even though I'm a savage 24/2400 kinda of shooter (24v in 20/30-30 is a terrific choice for the 20 ga enthusiast because of the other barrels that will interchange with the reciever) my "dream" has always been the winchester combo series,I guess because of the various calibers available--30-06,7x57,223 plus I just like the look of the gun

For me, moneys is no object?  as in MY gun, YOUR money??  lol

Vieerling, on a 20 ga. frame chambered for 16ga. x 16ga.. WITH a 7x65R under/between the shot bbls, and a 22WMR under the rib, above/between the shot bbls...    Weight can and should be at 6-3/4 pounds...  I want it to be scoped with claw mounts.

I had a friend who had a vieerling that was close, and did weigh 6-3/4 pounds, what a great gun!

Hey DM

Vierlings are very hard to find but I have something close.

My Fortuna is a 6x16/7x65r with a 22 WMR barrel insert and a Zeiss Diavari 2-10x50 scope with claw mounts...

That is a nice combo, but does it weigh 6-3/4 pounds??  Many times that's the hard part!

My "go to" drilling weighs 7 pounds, that's pretty close to the target weight...

A little heavy for my likeing, but it would be great for stand hunting where weight isn't as important.

For squirrel hunting it's hard to beat my Savage 24 S/D in 20/22lr. I have put a serious dent in the local population with it and it also has done double duty as a slug gun for the youngsters that I have taken after deer.

Ideally I'd like a 20 ga over a .25-35WCF (6.35x52R for you Continental types).  That would cover most of the hunting I'm likely to do.
I'm set up to load both and have found the .25-35 in my T-C Carbine kills our small blacktails and even pigs if you keep the range at around 100 yards or less.  I use better-shaped, slightly lighter bullets than any factory ever loaded in .25-35 ctgs. tho, and slightly warmer loads than factory powder charges.

A combo in that caliber/guage combination could be made very slim and well-balanced for quick wingshooting and easy to carry in the woods.  A friend of mine has a 16x8x40R that is close to my ideal weight and balance.  It is a prewar J.P. Sauer.  He makes the cases out of 8.15x46R and handloads lead bullets in it.  So far the biggest thing he's taken with it is a called coyote.

Drilling man hit mine on the head except it would have hammers.  That would work for everything I hunt.  If I were to hit the lottery I would like to get a set commisioned in the following, each engraved with the north american game they would be most suited for:
12x12/.30-06
16x16/.30-30
20x20/.223
28x28/.22 Hornet
.410x.410/.22WMR

When I was many years younger than I am now, my choice(s) would have been (were) more strenuous - but now that I'm ROFL (retired/old/fat/lazy), they're somewhat changed.

For deer, etc,  a Cape Gun or Drilling in 20ga x .243 - the lighter the better (Dural frame ?)

For small game, a 22LR with either a .410 or a 20ga  ( I have both a Savage 24 & a Stevens Four-Tenner).

OK
As I asked the question about combo guns, in my view it is the

20/30-30 for survival and specifically Stags Built
12/.222 for raccoon, coyote, skunk in Valmet 412
12/.30-06 for feral hogs in Valmet 412
12/9.3x74r for big hogs and big stuff in Valmet 412
Just mt .2 cents

Its one for each application...  8) ::) ??? :-*

Over all I would be hard pressed to find something better than the 12/30-06 given the availability of ammo but I really like the Stagss Bilt 20/30-30 for size and weight.  I am still formulating my opinion on the 20 ga...

Until I find a lighter replacement, an A. Zoli in 12ga and 6.5x55.  What I would like it to be is a lb lighter, but the rifle barrel is just about as accurate as anything that I have in the safe, shooting into the <3/4" range
It has a similar scope mount as the BRNO so it's a quick detach but heavy.
If it was a SxS it would be perfect.

Yipes, glad that I ripped up that old floor, what a mess.

Cheers

12/30-06 in a combo is hard to beat, but i much prefer to have a rimmed rifle cartridge in a break open gun.  Anyway, here's how my Valmet 12/30-06 shoots,

And that gun/load has put plenty of meat in my freezer,

A very good friend who has passed on a couple years now bought one of the old Remington Spartan double rifles in 30-06 and sent it to someone back east and had one of the barrels converted to smooth bore 410 so he had a double 30-06/410 side by side and he really loved it.

I owned that very rifle 30-30/20ga at one time and can't think of a more useful combo.
unless it would be 22mag/20ga. :D
