Fallkniven
« on: October 17, 2011, 02:55:32 PM »
I just received my Fallkniven PHK, (Professional Hunter Knife), G3 powdered steel, laminated between Vg2, R 62.
OMG!  I have never had a knife this sharp EVER!  I have owned a ton of knives and still do but this one is beyond shaving sharp.  I can't say enough about it.  Fallkniven knives are make to be used and this one will be in a couple of weeks when my zone opens here in Idaho.  While they are pricey, $270+ delivered, IMHO, they are totally worth it.
I also have a A2 survival knife in VG10 laminated that is also incredibly sharp and durable to boot.
I have owned custom knives, factory knives and have spent a ton of $$$$ on blades but for me at least, these are
the best!

Ive been lusting after the Fallkniven knives for about a year.  Good to hear a report about their blades while trying to understand why they are so expensive.

Knives Illustrated has a write up on the Fallkniven Northern Light family of knives and they look just wonderful...problem is the prices run from $400 + to well over 1k.  I guess if you look at them as a life time investment in a quality tool it makes more sense.

Good luck w/ putting first blood on your blade.

I think part of the price in the US is shipping from Sweden, customs, retail mark up and the expense of VG10 and G3.  I know they use another steel which puts knives in the $1,000+ area.  Likely, another big portion is that all their blades are hand ground one at a time by only one or two individuals.  Here is a forum that you will find interesting.

DC...thats a great link.  I spend way too much time checking out some of these knife forums.  I'd sure like to spend some time with some of these newer steels to see how they hold up over time.

I think the only way I can afford some of the finer knives is to pick up the blade and do the handle / finish work myself.

Here is a US company that sells Fallkniven more reasonably priced than everywhere else I have looked.
They sell blades as well but they are not inexpensive.

HEH. I'm glad you fellas can afford knives like that. Theres no way I could afford a $250 + knife, or even want one.  Even if I had one I'd be afraid to use it. Good hunting guys. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

I just picked up a F1 Barkniven which is a Fallkniven that has had custom macrata grips put on by Bark River off ebay for 162. Talk about sweet and scary sharp VG10 laminate steel the hair on my  arm pops off like a razor hit it.

My sentiments too.
Smoke 'em if you got 'em, as they say. Fallkniven's are wonderful, and I'm happy for those that have 'em.

I've got a very nice old carbon steel butcher knife I bought for 50 cents at the Church resale shop, and I modified the blade shape to sort of a Kephart. It's a great knife.
I might be persuaded to trade it for a Fallkniven  ;D

I lean that way too RG, though I sure dont begrudge anybody their choice, and have enjoyed using a few high end knives when offered.
Im curious about your modified Kep, as I did one last year, tried it a while, and just re-modded to a (better for me) Deweese. Any pics to PM me?

Hate to burst anyone's bubble, but Fallkniven's excellent knives aren't manufactured in Sweden; they sub-contract out.  The early F1's in ATS-34 were manufactured in Germany and all their current VG-10 knives are made in Japan.  Since the Japanese make excellent knives indeed, it explains the quality...and the price.  Made in Japan ain't cheap anymore.

I have a H 1 model that is made of the powdered steel. It is a very good knife but I find it a bit tricky to sharpen. It just takes a little longer but it does get sharp after a while. Fallkniven knives are convex grind so sharpening them is a learning experience especially those made of 3G steel.
They are a very high quality knife.
