If you are going to spend the money, wait till they come out with the .358 WSM 1.8.  It should approach .35 Whelen ballistics.

 Vic that looks good to me. I was and still am thinking of a .35 rem short. That will be the cheapest and easiest, counting the 460 s&w.

 I just went back and reread. I believe this may be better then the 35 rem. The ballistics are better with the 358 and you can make the brass out of .308(which is easy to come by) Dang it, now I have to rethink the whole thing. :o

That's the same cartridge I posted about in the Handi forum. .356 Win and .358 Win are nearly identical with the biggest difference being the rim. ;)


Good to see dies, but it's not all that hard to make use of .358 Win dies. A simple modification is all that's needed. I would consider that before spending any extra money on a "new" set of dies.


A Handi in .357 Mag or Max could be rechambered for this caliber.

A few are already testing a .358 WSM 1.8 right now.  Haven't heard a lot about it, but should be 150 to 200 fps faster than .358 WSSM.  Basically going from .358 Win to .35 Whelen equivalent.

  I was wrong the cartridge I mentioned was very similar. Thanks for posting this information. The way I see it is that every person is entitled to use whatever they want as long as if fits the rules and laws of the State.

Nonetheless, they're all gonna be deer killing machines! ;)

Hello to all Hoosiers I am new to this forum.  My present deer weapon(s) are a Marlin 44 mag and Remington 1100.  I am looking into the 458 SOCOM, the 450 Bushmaster and 50 Beowolf.  I have a lower put together and I reload so looking at all the advantages and disadvantages wondering about what others think.  My reason for the AR platform is its a semi auto holds enough ammo and being retired military fairly use to it.

Look on dtech site and check out their .358 wssm uppers. Less recoil, flatter trajectory, more range. Just my 2 cents.

  Welcome! I really have had a hankering for a .458 SOCOM since IN made PCRs legal for deer hunting. But.... I have found that it's not needed. I don't see it outdistancing the .357 Maximum and the Maxi will have less recoil, brass is cheap and reloading is a snap. Perhaps if we had larger game in IN to hunt like black bears I would have a different opinion, but the Maxi is king in my eyes. I shoot with a single-shot rifle and rarely need a second shot. Just my 2 cents worth. ;)

I couldn't agree more. I have been trying to find reasons to buy a Socom upper, but they just aren't there. I love single shot for deer hunting and I also love the Maxi.
