10/22 Accuracy?
« on: October 20, 2011, 04:43:52 AM »
Recently I have been using my Ruger 10/22 again. I had a trigger job done on it and that greatly improved the group size, but it is still about 2 inches at fifty yards. A friend rifle, the same gun is doing considerably better. Aside from replacement components like barrels, what have others done to theirs to help with accuracy?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Firelapping made a huge difference in my 10/22.....  We posted our results on this thread in the NES forum.....

Also.....have a look at this site.  I've had 2 rifles accurized with factory barrels by Randy...the first was a 10/22 special edition with a 20" barrel and the second a 77/17 bolt gun.  I've got another going in a few weeks.

Prolly the one single thing you can do that will improve accuracy the most is to find the ammo it wants to be fed. Do that and you'll likely cut group size in half assuming of course that you aren't the weak link in how it is grouping.

I've never owned a Ruger 10-22 but do own a clone by Magnum Research. It has all the bells and whistles folks add to their Ruger guns. It has a Hogue stock, carbon graphite wrapped barrel, full action job and is factory fitted with a picatinny rail on top. The only Ruger part in it is the magazine.

I've not truly explored just what the gun can do yet and to do that would need a lot more scope on it than it now wears. I have a Leupold VX-III 2.5-8 on it as to me it's a hunting rifle not a target rifle. Perhaps one day I'll put a varmint/target scope on it and see just how tiny it can group.

What I can tell you is it doesn't like the Federal buck HP ammo from Wal-Mart very much and doesn't really care for Winchester solids much more. It loves CCI Mini Mag HPs but then about every .22 LR gun I've owned has.

I tried everything from bulk to boutique ammo.
My off-the-shelf 10/22 with Leupold 4x rimfire scope does 1/2" at 50 yds with CCI subsonics, and almost as well with CCI Velocitors.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

Graybeard you may be right as to the shooter! I too have set up the rifle as a hunting tool, and it wares a 1.5-5 scope as compared to my buddy's 3-9. That could account for some of the difference even though we have been using a rifle rest for sighting. But I have only tried two types of ammo and they did not include the CCI. Looks like a trip to the gun store is in order. Though I have had it for a number of years, it has been fired very little, and perhaps a bore inspection for roughness is needed.

My 10/22 loves CCI. So much so that the groups at 50 yds are less than 1/2 the size of other brands. The Mini-Mags seem to group the best. Bought this little rifle used in 1966 and have put many a round down the barrel. Still a 1 incher at 50 yds.

I am building a stock carving vise for my carving bench and had to run out for parts this morning. In checking two local stores that carry ammo, neither had them, so it is off to the candy store this weekend! I really hate making the trip, but a man--well you know. I did get out and check my Browning BLR to make sure that the scope is still on and brought the TC Contender in 7-30 to sight in. Both are now on at two hundred yards and ready to do there duty next month.

I have a 10/22 with a pac lite threaded barrel, hogue guille green stock, trigger work pickatinny rail with a bsa sweet 22 scope and a stream light mounted under the stock. I shoot CCI standard velocity. The gun does very well with them. I also have a suppressor for it and the standard velocity stay subsonic. When zeroed in at 50 it will have about a 2" group at 100 with the 40grain turrett dialed in to 100 yards.

I have two Ruger 10/22's. The first is a cheap Walmart special with the crinkle coat/epoxy type finish. It is totally stock with the exception of having a suppressor mounted on the factory barrel and a 3x9 scope.  It will shoot 3/4" at 50 yards with Remington subsonic ammo and Remington thunderbolts.  It does a bit better with the 40 grain Aguila subsonic load. The other 10/22 is totally stock with a 3x9 scope mounted and it will shoot about 1" at 50 with most loads I have tried.

I am sure both of mine would improve some with a decent trigger.

I have done a trigger job on mine and that did improve it a bit. It is now smooth and light as compared to what it was. Mine does not have the stainless trigger group parts so it cleaned up nicely. I have also done a stock reforming to it. The factory stocks suply enough wood to cover two rifles. Other than that, I would like to leave it factory as it too is a hunting rifle and should be doing better than it is. I need to get the CCI Mini Mags and try them next. Remington and Federal were not on its like list.
