My local gun club had an event where you could shoot dealer's samples for free years ago, I chose to shoot a P-95, and liked it enough to buy a P89 new in the box as I liked the all aluminum frame better.
My P-89 never jambed, reasonably accurate, kept it for my travel and as a home defense gun for awhile. Many a time it sat on my motel bed when on the road. After I had it at the range for a period of time I noticed that the accuracy was not all that great compared to my other guns, even my Bulgarian Makarov beat it at 50'. Upon closer examination I noticed alot of play between the frame and the slide, on other forums shooters had mentioned that as well. The barrel and slide were not evenly wearing on the contact points of the frame too. It has been called the "AK-47 of the pistol world" due to its utilitarian features.
I sold my P-89 as the finish was not all that great, the accuracy was ho-hum and the wear point issues. My other pistols are better, mostly Glocks. I had read that the P-89s were more accurate than the P-95 due to the rigid aluminum frame, so maybe that helps to explain why they are not as common. I could see having either as a duty carry pistol in law enforcement, no-nonsense shooter, tough and reliable. But as a thing of beauty, no.
