Will changing receivers shift impact?
« on: October 20, 2011, 10:16:59 AM »
Hey all,
I've got an Encore that I trade back and forth from my main turkey gun, to my daughter's deer rifle, to my daughter's ML, to my slug gun.

I'm going to get a Prohunter receiver to allow her to take my current receiver when she gets old enough (took her first deer with it and an exotic ram).

This made me wonder if anyone has noticed dramatic changes in point of impact when changing to another receiver.

thanks
Ken

Some barrels and frames just fit better together and shoot tighter groups. Only way to know is to give them a try. My Encores seem much more forgiving in this reguard vs my contenders.

Iowa Fox is correct. each is a rule unto itself, so the only way to know for certain is to try it. Most likely, the shift will be minimal, but as a stickler for perfection, I won't even stand for that much and generally try and dedicate a given barrel to a given frame, even though that defeats the unique intended purpose of interchangeability.

For most shooting/hunting the differences are minor enough not to matter much.   I always dedicated barrels to specific frames, and if needed reworked the barrel for the frame it was dedicated to.   But as a dedicated long range hunter first, I wanted the best precision I could get from them.   As my frame inventory grew some barrels and frames were paired together, and no other barrel was ever shot on those frames.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Not to say it will but yes it can. Frame to barrel gap comes to play when head spacing you cartridge. Frame to barrel gap can vary between frames and barrels. Head space can effect accuracy and impact.

Actually the amazing thing is that they work as well as they do.  ;D I have found and occasional barrel that would not lock up on a frame but usually will on another frame.  ;) Thats a good case for having several frames.

In my last go-around with contenders I had a dedicated frame for each barrel, then I sold all my tender stuff. This time I started buying frames. Hit it just right I guess and bought 4 SS frames and a like new blued one. At the moment I only have 2 barrels. One barrel a MGM 223 barrel would only fit on one SS frame. So they will stay together. Don't know if I will add any more barrels but this time I'll keep the frames.
