pachmayr barrel lug

Does anyone know where to buy/make/steal  :oops: alternative barrel lugs for the pachmayr forends? If I had the proper machining tools and skills I think they'd be easy to make from 1/2" bar stock. I'd mill + drill 'em myself. I love the grips and forends, but I think the price they charge for the insert is rediculous. Thanks in advance for any help. :D

Hi Hubcap,

Maybe I have been lucky, but the all the Pachmayr forearms I have ordered have come with the adaptor included. What has been your experience?

They show up on eBay regularly also.  Sometimes cheap, sometimes not.

Making them yourself is just false economy, unless you simply enjoy the making them part.    Got better things to do with my time.   I buy mine by the bag from a friend who does make them (about $6 apiece), and all my barrels wear them even though I do have a bunch of Pachy grip/forend sets.   Only sells them to me in quantity because we're old friends though.

What am I missing here guys? Why do you want a bunch of them if you don't have the forearms? Twenty years of T/C'ing and I am clue-less???? :shock: I must be dense?

Well, in my case anyway... with the style of custom bars I have it floats the Pachy off the barrel, so why I use them in the first place (instead of Pachmayr's junk bars).  Now I have a bunch of barrels - A BUNCH!   And I have quite a few complete Pachy sets as well, even extra forends, but not one for every barrel I own (or will own).  At the prices for the Pachy forends now days, I install and set (2 screws) my bars on each barrel and leave them there, then swap forends from barrel to barrel as needed - one screw instead of three and go shooting.   Works for me.

For the 10" barrels, I have started cutting my hanger bars in half and drilled and tapped another hole in the remaining end. I recently purchased a barrel with a Pachmayr forend attached and found a short hanger bar underneath. I measured my other bar and found there was enough material for making two from one. The 14" hanger bars have 2 countersunk holes in them making them universal for 10" and 14". I guess someone at Pachmayr decided to cut cost by making a smaller one with less metal for the 10". When drilling the hole, a drill press with an indexing table is necessary for a precise hole. I believe the thread is 8x32 but double check.

Thanks for the info Ladobe. I am afraid that I am one of those boneheads that just keeps switching lugs from barrel to barrel, especially when I get a new one and don't yet have a forearm for it :?  Having a lug for each barrel does make good sense economically. :wink:
