Trouble with extractor on the 7MM Mag
« on: October 22, 2011, 11:40:12 AM »
The extractor on the Encore does,t seem to drop down enouth to load the & mag cartridle. When I go to load, the case will only go up to the belt on the case. Extractor will not lower irself enough to allow me to send the round into battery. Case edge will hit/ride the frame enought to go into battery. I don't like it. Seems a might bit dangerous this way. Any suggestions.

Lucky
   Store bought and reloads
I took it all apart
,honed and lightly greased the spring etc. Put it back together, same thing. Finally found the problem. The belt on the cartridge is cut at a 90 degree angle with the case. and the tip of the extractor is cut at a 90 degrees also. So bacically its a flat area pushing against a flat are, so no give or drop in the extractor so the case can slide forward.
Going to add a little bevel to the extractor to see if I can correct that. Too much bevel and the thing might not extract. Gonna call Thompson Monday and get them to send me a new extractor and spring just in case.
              Thanks for the reply

QUIT screwing around with the extractor.  It's fine.  All you have to do is turn the cartridge as it abuts the extractor and it will go right in.

Belted mags and TC extractors are not an ideal combination. I had the same problem you have and after a call to TC was told to bevel the extractor a little at a time until it worked. Even  after the bevel it would still drag on the cartridge and I did not like this. I no longer have any belted rounds due to the extra efforts it takes to chamber a round. For my hunting purpose's there are to many other choice's in cartridges that will load with no extra effort.

David
That is what I did. A little bit of bevel and it's working a lot better. Not 100% but better.
Grumulkin gave good advice, and yes, it works when you rotate the catridge. Can't give up on this one because she is a good shooter.
   Thanks for the reply.
