The Max and pointed bullets
« on: October 22, 2011, 12:56:18 PM »
I've been loading my 357 Max with Remington 180gr. HPs and now I have some Hornady 180gr SSPs I want to try but don't know about using the same seater plug with the pointy bullets. What do you Max loaders use? BTW they are RCBS dies, thanks Tom.

RCBS will make you a custom seater plug for your seater die if you send them 5 bullets and $17. You may be able to modify the existing seater plug with epoxy putty using a bullet to form it or drill it so it self centers on the ogive of the bullet, I've drilled them before, but there has to be a center hole for a pilot.

From their FAQs...

Q. When I seat the bullet, the seater plug cuts a ring around the bullet just below the nose. What causes this?

A. In short, the seater plug does not fit the bullet you are using. The seater plug furnished with the Seater Die normally will fit the great majority of the bullets for that particular caliber. However, we cannot make one seater plug fit all bullets currently available. If you experience this problem or any similar problem where the seater plug doesn't match the bullet and you wish to have a special seater plug made, we can supply one from the Special Order Department at minimum cost. See our Special Order Catalog for current pricing.

I used the seater from my .308 dies to load some regular .357's with FTX bullets.  Did an OK job, didn't cause any damages to the bullets.

Yep, as long as the seater plug from another set sortof matches the ojive of your bullets and fits the dieset you are good, if you start the bullet straight as possible in the neck. I like to push down in a little, lift slightly and rotate the case 1/3 turn, down a little more and repeat.

+1 Gcrank.  Another tip Tim (Quickdtoo) gave me was to use my Lee Loader to start bullets with good concentricity, so if you have one for .357, give it a go.  Starts much straighter.  ;)

Thanks guys for the help. I've sent an email to RCBS. Hopefully there's a seater available, if not I've got a friend with a lathe, I might even try drilling that plug myself.

Tom,
Also, if you have the older dies that are made for the Maximum specifically, there's a good chance you can just swap the seater plug. The 35 Rem and 35 Whelen use the same plug for pointy bullets. If all else fails, I have the one I modified before I did the swap. You can have it.

Thanks, Dinny

I drilled mine, the ring does not bother me and doesn't seem to make any difference as far as grouping, I'm sure the deer and hogs wont like it, but I can live with that.

Don't mean to go off on a tangent but I shot the Max today and those Remington 180s grouped so well I'm not so sure I need to use the SSPs. At 90 yds. 3 shots made 2 holes and they were touching. The load is 27grs. of AA1680. Have you guys had any experience with their performance on game? Thanks, Tom

Good shooting Tom!!  Yours is a bit more than my accuracy loading form my barrel!

YES I have shot game with this bullet.. IMHO it is too soft, as are ALL HP bullets sans the XTP 180.  This is a big part of the reason most use the SSP... Not to many pistol bullets that preform properly on big game, at these hi velocities the Maxi attains.
