Russia plans to build base on the moon in lunar caves.
« on: October 22, 2011, 01:03:32 PM »
STAR CITY, Moscow Region — The United States may have put the first man on the moon, but Russian scientists and space explorers are now gazing at a new goal — setting up a colony on the moon.

The discovery of volcanic tunnels on the moon could provide a natural shelter for the first lunar colony, cosmonauts and scientists said Tuesday.
Researchers have long suspected that the moon’s volcanic past left an underground network of lava tubes as its legacy, and 2008 images from Japan’s Kaguya spacecraft showed a possible way down — a mysterious, meters-deep hole breaching the surface.

“This new discovery that the moon may be a rather porous body could significantly alter our approach to founding lunar bases,” veteran spaceman Sergei Krikalyov, who heads the Star City cosmonaut training center, said at a forum on the future of manned spaceflight.
“If it turns out that the moon has a number of caves that can provide some protection from radiation and meteor showers, it could be an even more interesting destination than previously thought,” he said.
A slide-show image showing bunker-like inflatable tents dotting the lunar landscape gave forum participants an impression of potential lunar bases.
“There wouldn’t be any need to dig the lunar soil and build walls and ceilings,” Krikalyov said. “It would be enough to use an inflatable module with a hard outer shell to — roughly speaking — seal the caves.”
The first such lunar colonies could be built by 2030, estimated Boris Kryuchkov, deputy science head at the training center.
As the world’s space agencies debate where to fly beyond low-Earth orbit, including deep-space missions to asteroids and Mars, the European Space Agency’s head of human spaceflight programs said the moon also looked attractive.
“There is still a very strong focus on the moon. It could be a natural first to go there,” Martin Zell said.

deploying weapons is the only reason to go there.  but there's no need.  we'll soon be peaceful, loving muslim nation and no threat to the soviets.

That's an ambitious plan. These days or by 2030 who knows the technology might even be available. I don't for one minute believe anyone from earth has reached the moon yet. The technology just didn't exist when we pretended to go there. Didn't happen.

The cost to colonize the moon is just to prohibitive. The Russians have great propulsion technology but they are behind in alot of other areas. Maybe by 2030 by I doubt it. Weaponizing the moon would be even more costly. For a country that can't feed it's own people the moon is just out of reach.

Mr Greybeard,
Sorry the technology does exist, the US and Soviets have both been to the moon. The show Mythbusters even showed enough evidence there were landings on the moon.
Not going and lying about it is just too big of secret to keep. You know how people love blabbing to the press.

This is exciting news in the world of science.  My only objection is the Russians beating us in the space race.  We should have done this decades ago.

As far as weaponising a lunar colony, that doesn't make any sense.  Why lug weapons to the moon to strike targets on Earth?  If they wanted to nuke us they'd nuke us.  What they want is to milk our economy, which they are doing.

This is good news, with the exception of the fact that we aren't doing it.  The push will create economic oportunities and technological advancements.  We should be gaining those advantages but Obama has mothballed NASA, so we are sucking hind teat on this one.

Are the aliens who already have hidden bases on the moon going to welcome their new neighbors?

I didn't know that lunar caves had been identified. Interesting!

Maybe they got the idea from a 1950s sci fi movie.

:)  Howdy! In 1968 a friend of mine was asked if he thought the United States would get to the moon first. Rufus Woolridge replied, "Well, I don't know if the US will get there first; however, the US will be the first country to send it foreign aid."  Always, Gene

I have been quite dissapointed with the decision to stop the shuttle program before a replacement was ready. I look at any forward step in the space program as a positive thing. Not sure a base on the moon is within the foreseable future but it would be a great accomplishment. I look at putting men on the moon as one of our contries greatest achievements.

That link is pretty funny. My only worry now is that TM7 has read your post has visited that site.

Just because NASA is hamstrung at this time there is no reason to think it will remnain so after a change in the Admin.
