Alternative to Lee Loader, 20 Ga.
« on: October 22, 2011, 10:21:06 PM »
Hi All,
Anyone know if something similar to the old Lee Loader is being manufactured these days, hopefully in 20 ga.?

My father taught me with a Lee Loader decades ago. Despite having lots of centerfire equipment, seems Lee Loader was all he had around for shot. Guess an appreciation for it's simplicity rubbed off on me. So was hoping something similar was out there.

Though I have to admit, putting my hand over the top of a shell and compressing, putting the primer in or after the primer is in, feels awfully risky. Granted people have been using said design for who-knows-how-long. Any other simple, small devices, maybe like the 310 tool exist for shot shells?

I'm aware of the "Nail and dowel" method, but was thinking the type stuff probably does a better job of keeping the shell from deforming come crimp time.

Anyway, I'm all ears for either a homemade or manufactured, simple solution to shotshell loading.

Don't think I'd crimp if it were me.  Probably do a roll crimp and use an overshot card.  That or use brass shells as they are re-usable easily.  If you really want to do this though, you might consider some of the really nice Rocky Mountain Cartridge brass shells.  Same thickness as regular shotgun shells, so correct wads and such can be used.  They also for 35 bucks have a loading system for them.  ;)  The initial cost is a bit more, but 20 for $50 isn't bad when you consider their durability.  The only downside is that in 20 ga. I think only the 2-5/8" size is available.  The loading system can be made at home with dowels etc.as you said too.  ;)

Give the lee load all II a. Look. It is not that expensive and works well. It is kind of a go between the loader and a normal shot shell loader
