Sighting in new scope
« on: January 11, 2004, 02:37:08 AM »
Going to the range this afternoon to sight in a new scope on my Encore 44 mag.  Will start at the 25 yd line.  Any suggestions on quick sighting a scope?

Suggest bore sighting first.......  Has helped me save a lot of time and amo.

Unless your last name is Rockafeller or Dupont, you might consider spending $40 and  buying a Leupold magnetic bore siter to speed up the task and save the cost of ammo.  Just my thoughts

Open the action and look through the bore at the 25 yard target.  Center the target in the bore.  Now center your crosshairs on the 25 yard target.  Keep the gun still and keep looking in barrel in scope, back and forth, making sure target is still centered in both.

This is pretty rough for adjusting things, but it has seemed to work pretty well for me to avoid shooting off the target and having to guess where the shots are hitting when things are way off from the start.

Just a thought - doesn't require buying anything.

Just use a big sheet of paper for a target.  I have never sighted a gun in that took more than 5 shots to get it ready for tweaking of the scope.  Could never understand the boresighting thing, I have seen bore sighted guns be plenty far off and then those guys do not have a big sheet of paper with them because they thought the bore sighter was magic.

I bore sight at home before going to the range.  I'll take the barrel off and rest it on bags, then center the neighbors porch light by looking through the barrel, then get the scope crosshairs to line up on the light also.  Should at least be on the paper at 25 yds.   I'll do my final zero at 60 or 100 yds depending on the caliber and power of the scope.
