Removing plastic from a 54 New Englander

I did some shootin Friday. I shot several power belt bullets, and the barrel got extremely fouled. Of course when I went to clean it I found burnt plastic. I soaked it with lacquer thinner and then used the bronze brush. It came clean.
 
Are power-belt bullets just for in-lines? No more plastic for me. No power-belts  and no sabots. Minies work just fine.

i never had a problem with burnt plastic using sabots in my in line

i shoot thousands of powerbelts each year and never once have i ever found signs of plastic residue.

54 New Englander. 90 grains of 777 pushing 500 grain conical. I think I shot a similar bullet in a 50 awhile ago and I don't recall any problem. Odd

i  think that's a really stiff charge of 777. try backing it off to 80grains see how that works. that are put a card board wad under the bullet

I know that acetone will take plastic wad fouling out of a shotgun barrel very easily.  I use it and it works great.  If you do have plastic fouling, you may want to give it a try.  I would keep it away from any wood or plastic though.

Lacquer thinner and acetone are pretty much the same thing. I should mention at one point it  ejected some burning black stuff.  I wonder if it could be the lube I used on the minis. I was trying some synthetic grease or spray-on teflon. In the past I have recovered 50 cal power-belts, they appeared to be normal, not melted. I will look for some of the 54 belts, if they are not melted it would point to the mini lube.

I found some of the 54 powerbelts, they look normal. It looks like the problem is the grease I had on the minnie balls. I'll rinse them off and use something else. Thats good, I like the powerbelts.

I wonder why this thread was moved? I have eleven ML rifles, none are in-lines. Oh well.

Discussion of Sabot's or modern bullets is not allowed in the Traditional Muzzleloading forum...   ::)

Confirmed! The junk in the barrel was the grease I used on the minnie bullets. Good! I like the big powerbelts.

Whenever I want to check my sabot or wad performance I just go to the range after a fresh snow. Finding all the pieces is a piece of cake.
