Canada throws out Long Gun registry
« on: October 25, 2011, 12:51:13 PM »
2 billion dollars of taxpayers money later-and by their own statistics, did not result in one single life saved, the Canadian Long Gun registry was finally voted out.

It did serve its purpose,however-gaining Liberal votes from the inner city where the government wanted it to make it look like they were ''doing something'' about fighting crime...

The good guys finally win one in Canada.  Hopefully you threw out the liberal politicians along with the ban.  8)

yup,we threw the Liberals out too-they were decimated in the last election, and reduced to an ineffective postion in parlement-even losing their ''leader of the opposition''status.
The Long gun registry was ''ineffective and completely wastefull'',served no useful purpose other than creating jobs [many of which took police off the streets and into offices doing paperwork]
There were horror stories of the ''tip line'' which was set up to alert police of potential  firearms violence. While well meaning-it became a tool for disgruntled people,ex spouses and opportunists to harrass law abiding citizens-the police could and did come in without a search warrent and confiscate all firearms at a persons residence. One individual in Toronto was arrested, marched out into the street in his underware, while the police seached his home and confiscated his 14 guns-which they later found to be all legally owned and registered .The charges were later dropped.
If the objective of the Long gun registry was to make it so onorous and complicated to own firearms and go  hunting-it was a resounding success-hunting licences declined by 50% .Thousands of hunting rifles and shotguns were turned over to the police for destruction-many of which were collector status.
but did it actually DO anything in terms of saving lives or making peoples lives safer?-no.....the politicians  and the naive voters failed to take into account one simple fact-criminals don't register their weapons-they never have-thats why they are criminals....

polititicians of all stripes will say whatever it takes to get elected....and unfortionately voters tend to be simplistic. The Liberals  wanted it to make it ''look like'' they were ''doing something''about ''fighting crime''-instead of using the laws we have on the books right now.In Canada, the MAJORITY of the population[and the votes] are in 3 main urban center-Montreal,Toronto and Vancouver-where the MAIN criminal activety and organized crime exists and the votes the politicians go after.Couple this with vocal the anti hunting crowd  and the result is  farmers, deer hunters and target shooters are in the MINORITY -their votes don't count-and that is all that politicians look at.

Unfortunately, that is true in most of the states that are defined as liberal.  NYS politics where I live is basically controlled by liberals in the large population centers like NYC.  The rest of the state which consist of conservative minded people are ignored.

Sadly we are governed by the whims of the population centers.

One more plus for each county having ONE electoral vote.

I know you guys are Americans-but don't think what happened in Canada can't happen to you,and I strongly suggest you use the Canadian long gun registry as an example of what happens when people DON'T get out to vote-because-trust me-the anti gun people ARE.
Having said this,I want to go on record as being STRONGLY IN FAVOUR of
-firearms education programs
-safe storage
-criminal background checks, criminals have given up their rights to owning firearms
-MANDATORY  minimum sentances to be served CONSECTUTIVELY for any crime committed with a firearm,no bargaining it away

The Auditor General of Canada calls the Long Gun Registry ''one of the biggest messes ever created by government''-please note-this is the Auditor General is NOT  a political figure and has no bias towards or against firearms
