what to do with a 12x12/9x74r Drilling
« on: October 25, 2011, 03:45:04 PM »
I have a 1969 Merkel drilling in 12x12/9.3x74r with extra full and improved modified chokes.  the EF and IM chokes are too tight for slugs and OO buck.  Given this 9.3x74r is a great round for larger game and I plan on using it for hogs, should I open the chokes to allow for slugs and OO buck? Or leave them EF and IM?

thanks

Doug

I wouldn't be  afraid to shoot "foster style slugs" in it at all, have you tried them??

As for opening the chokes: Are you going to keep this drilling forever?

DougK,

If you are going to keep the gun, why not open up the chokes? In my view the gun would be much more usefull, with modern shells, with more open chokes.  ;)
I personally have very little use for super tight chokes. With the shells we have available to us now days IC &Mod works great for my style of hunting.  :o

I am concerned about creating the bulge, the tube diameter is 18.3mm which is very tight and I would expect to build pressure.

I plan to keep this gun forever, given it was made in 1969 during the commie period I do not believe it has much collector value.

Given the unique caliber's and the interest in the 9.3x74r round would it  be more valuable as a shooter with less restricted chokes?

Regards,

I am leaning that way.  An I will never use this gun for fox or turkey...

That's why i stated "foster style" slugs, they have the soft lead ribs that displace when going through tight chokes.

No matter, if i was keeping it, i'd open the chokes to where ever i wanted.
