Scope for Ruger No.1
« on: October 26, 2011, 02:20:44 PM »
I just bought a Ruger no 1 in 450/400 nitro express and would like suggestions for a low power long eye relief scope.

I believe Leupold makes a Variable 1-4 X.  I bet that would work.  Nice Rifle and nice caliber.  Bet your are pretty pleased.

Thanks for the replies. I have always had good luck with Leupold and will check out the ones you guys recomended. I have only shot the 450/400 with open sights but I really like it and at 8 pounds its not too heavy to carry.

3 feathers,

With my RUGER #1s in 45/70, I found shooting with iron sights to be very painful!!!!!!!!!! due to the low head position required.

You may be pleasently supprised, as the higher head position with the scope makes the rifle pleasent to shoot.

Before I got the scope mounted, I wondered what I had gotten myself into.

The scope was in the plans from the start, so glad I went ahead and put that Leupold 2X7 in place.

I think the 1X4 or 1.5X5 would be great, but the used 2X7 was more in my price range at that point.

The rifle is carried at 2 power, and only turned up on the bench or if a hunting situation provides the time or need to do so.

Keep em coming!

I have a No. 1 in .338 that has a roughly 2X Leopold fixed magnification scope on it. Even with the tallest Ruger scope mounts you can still see the front sight while looking through the scope. Also it is not click adjustable; it only has the marked graduations on the dial. Something to watch for if you decide you need a fixed low power. Having said that I have used that scope for over 20 years with no problems which is why I like Leupold.

Greg,

Yep, I can see the fuzzy front sight in the scope, but it has never bothered me, as I am looking past the fuzzy image and at the sharp target/critter and the cross hairs.

And YEP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! on the Leupolds.  Have had some others over the years, but always came back to the Leupold in the end and was NEVER sorry I did so.  On some other scopes, can't say I wasn't sorry.  Guess that is why they are no longer with me.

Keep em coming!

You could also consider a Holo scope like  the Docter, Leupy or Fastfire2 fo this. My 450 NE is wearing the Fastfire2 that I got from a gent on here.
