i don't apply a lot of crimp but i could?? i would like to know why 2400 needs lots of crimp?

I don't use 2400 that much any longer.... It shoots plenty accurate, but the unburned powder is quite bothersome... MAG primers and FIRM crimps helped allot...

If I loaded it today, I would not even do so if I was not able to crimp...

This is what I have found, your results could vary..

bull nutria:  reading your posts sounds exactly like what i went through when i purchased the exact same rifle season before last.  what i finally discovered, after chasing groups all over the target, was that my problems could all be attributed to barrel heat.  i would get a cold bore shot in one place, then a group in another place, then a pattern all over the target as the barrel warmed.  this is at 100 yds.  if i just sat down and started shooting at 50 yds, i'd have ugly 2-4" groups like you are describing.

my solution was to sight in for the cold bore shot.  took forever, cause i had to let the barrel cool off completely between shots.  but now i have complete confidence that the 1st shot will be dead on the money, and have some targets and a deer to prove it.

it is disappointing to me that i can't just take the rifle out to the range and plink with it, but i have confidence in it as a single shot hunting arm.

might work for you, might not, i just suggest giving it a try.  the load i use is a full charge of H110 per the hodgdon manual, 240 g XTP, magnum CCI primers.  put a crimp on it, too.

well i don't know what you are asking Gcrank? i do have soem .432 cast bullets and i have reloaded some 265g FP with crimps this time. I will report results when i get a chance to go to the range.
I bought some flat washers at the hardware store yesterday to put under my forend screw. both of them tore when  i screwed the forend on( too much OD) I had some red rubber washers for my origianl barrel but forgot to take them off when i sent itto Ilion. I am going to a different hardware store next.
does anybody know the correct size for these rubber flat washers? it appears that it is about 3/8in or 7/16in OD and 1/4in ID?? or what the proper O ring size is for a handi??
Re Gators, lots of folks are watching swamp people and are getting "hollywooded" by the producers. gator hunting is not glamorous and not very dangerous. the gator bites the baited hook , the hunter comes along pulls gently on the line the gator head surfaces and you shoot him between the eyes with  a 22mag for samll gators and something bigger like a 30-30 for the larger 8-12ft gators. then it  is over little or no thrasing--no dramatic music, just lots of work and it is usually about 90 F and 90 humidity in SLA in September.
So enjoy Swamp people for what it is, alot of hyped up foolishness,
Our gator population is very high and growing. i have been working with gators for 37 years and have never seen more gators!

O-rings and washers go on the stud, not on the screw, like most everything else, it's covered in the FAQs, there's even a pic! ;)

1- 210g pointed gas checked cast bullet, best load 22 g 2400 group 2-inch Center to center (CTC) at 50yds

Thats sounding pretty good! To what do you attribute the greatest improvement in accuracy?

i don't attribute the improvements to any one thing, perhaps a combination of more crimp, rubber washers under the foreend, an attempt to have more attention to proper sight alignment and trigger squeeze as well as consistency of placing the gun exactly the same on the sandbags  for each shot as well as slaming the breech closed the same way before each shot etc.

note these groups were at 50yds on a near windless afternoon. I did let the barrel cool between 9 shot strings.

My quest will be complete if i can get a near one inch group at 100 yds with this rifle!! I am heading back to the reloading bench to fine tune my reloads for the next trip to the range.

sometimes you get it right away other times you have to work at it. way to stick with it,
groups seem to be improving. i see you bumped up the charges a little, i had the same results with 2400 groups got better the closer to max i got.

Mr. Bull..You are probably tired of suggestions but I read way back in this post -- someone suggested you let the barrel cool...I'm sure that was between each shot  not each group of 9 shots. When target shooting for the pictures I always let cool -- usually bring another gun or 2 to be shootin' . Anyhow's good luck to ya...
