aa5744 and 2400 have held the accuracy edge in my rifles in the smokeless powder categories. I like the lower pressures they work at .
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

I sure hope he is, because I'm waiting for Saturday to get here, and I'm bored, or can you tell?
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Hi guys, it's me, MSPRet, the OP that opened this rather lively discussion. Late this afternoon, after a days yard work and going to the dump I continued on to the the range with a couple of guns, a 16 gauge single H&R (full choke) with 5 different kinds of slugs (another story) and a 45-70 Handi of proven accuracy with just 3 rounds loaded with TB.
A couple of days ago I checked and determined a Lee Loader #167 scoop threw a pretty consistant 12.7 charge of TB so that is what I used. I loaded just 3 rounds and used the prelubed (looks like alox) bullets that weighed out at 414.1 grains. I choose them because I had 3 at that weight.
I set up at the range at 50 yards and preceeded to put the first 2 holes touching each other 2.5 inches high directly above the bulls eye and then called the last a bit right/low, 3/4" away from the first 2 shots. Only 3 shots I know, but encouraging. I will load up another 6 or 10 tonight at the same load and try them at 100 yards.
I would be real interested in the results Dinny and Doublebass73 get when/if they get to try a TB load on a deer this year.  I would like to give it a shot next year myself, at 100 yards or less. And thanks gcrank1, if I did live close I'm sure we would burn up a lot of powder together....<><.... :)

P.S. - Thanks for all the good info for loading my 45-70 lead bullet/Trail Boss combo for my H&R Handi Rifle guys. I am sorry that it got switched to the handloading forum though...I have added Handi Rifle to the title but it's too late to save it where I originally posted it. My question was meant to be directed to other Handi Rifle shooters for thier experience with TB in thier 45/70's but I guess I was not specific enough in the first title.

I'm still curious as to the origin of those postell bullets. Pictures of those and the target would be good.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

The picture of the bullet was helpful, it's not a postell, but rather some sort of hollowpoint.
The bullet and loaded round on the right side of this picture is the new style postell bullet. The bullet and round on the left side is the RCBS 82084 bullet it also is a 530 gr bullet, but it's nose is more of the traditional postell design, some have come to call it a creedmoor style nose.

I use trail boss in my ruger 1 45/70 med sporter, 16 Grns pushing a 300 grn speer hp bullet and at 70 yrds it will go through 5  3/4 fir boards so I would say that will kill a deer but I would not wont to use it or at least this load out to 100 plus yrds. I have a contender rechamber 44 mag to 444 marlin and Hodgdon powder tec. told me that using TB and a 240 grn xp bullet out of the 14 inch barrel it would give around 1200 fps and kill any deer I could hit up to 75 yards.
That load is 13 GRN Tb and 240 grn bullet, I would have to check but I think 16 is max on the 444 in contender pistol.

S, if i understand this correctly,
You would not use a 45-70 when it, at about 1200fps, has been reliably 'killing stuff' at well over 100yds for how many years?
