What Style Are These
« on: October 29, 2011, 12:46:56 PM »
My friend that runs the pattern shop called and said he needed someone to watch the shop for 2 days.Well I had 2 piece of steel here and guess what happened to them.Hope the pics. follow.  The mortar is made of 2 in.x 1018,3 7/8 long, bore is for a 58 cal. ball patched, 5/16 x 1/2 in powder chamber, The back part looks smaller but only 1/16 per side. I my turn the front down to match,
The other barrel is a piece of 4140,50 cal. OD is 1.444 tapered down to .885 and5 in. long.
I free handed both barrels with no print, Just drilled and reamed the bores, then turned the barrels to what ever came into my head,Didnt take much over 1 hr. one each one,
What style is the cannon barrel and what kind on a carriage would look good on it, Thanks for looking, Joe

The cannon to me looks like some variety of siege gun or howitzer, might look really nice on a siege carriage or a barbette mount.  I want it!

Rule of thumb guideline, trunnions should be no less than bore diameter

Marsilly for sure!!

Or standard naval.. Go to reference stickies, I think you  will find some carriage plans there.  I am pretty sure the SAMCC carriage plans are listed.

Found a picture of the heavy seacoast howitzer of 1842 that is a pretty close approximation of your barrell in The Big Guns on p63. Apparently designed by Col. Bomford and cast in 1843.  At 14,326 lbs that tube needed a stout carriage, unfortunately no drawings of the carriage are present.
