Anyone Tried Patching 7.62x54r?
« on: October 29, 2011, 03:05:40 PM »
Hi All,
Been reading about the bore size differences of Mosin-Nagants, got me to wondering if anyone has tried say .308 bullets with a paper patch in them?

Seems like it would be an interesting alternative, especially if it removes the need for a gas check.

Can anyone point me to a "beginners guide to paper patching" somewhere on the web that might cover the idea of patching and bottleneck cartridges? Have to admit, all I know about patching is related to muzzleloaders.

Can patching be done with simple tools like a Lee Loader or Lee Hand Press or does it require some trickery to achieve good loading without say, tearing the patch?

P.S. Where does one get reliable loading data for patched rounds? Or is there some accepted procedure for working it up?

The Cast Boolit web site has most everything you need to know about paper patched bullets.  There are many posts on paper patching the 7.62x54R and 303 British.  Many have gotten good results with a patched 30 cal bullets.  Good luck.

The reverend beat me to it...that's where the action on PP is. The cast booliteers can steer you right. And yes, M-N rifles respond quite well to PP. My own 91-30 shoots the Ranch Dog 170 patched to .314" quite well.

Hey Rev - the guy up on medium bore rifles needs to know how to load his 9.3X 74R. You look like the guy to answer that one. (I gotta get me one of those someday...)

Thank you Gents. Much obliged. Trying to convince myself there was a good reason to buy a 91/30 other than just, "I wanted it, LOL!". :-)

Seriously though, seems there are few molds purpose designed for it, but lots of good BC mold for .308, so seems like a match to me.
