44 mag-10" TC Contender Loads needed
« on: October 31, 2011, 03:52:46 PM »
I just got a 10" 44 mag barrel that I plan on using for hogs out to about 25-50 yards.  I am going to use open sights, not that that matters.  Anyway, I bought a box of Hornady 240 gr. XTP's.  Does anyone have a good load for this?

Thanks.

I agree, work up an H110 load with those xtp's.  I shoot 24.5 gr. H110, CCI 350, and starline brass with that projectile.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughing. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

It seems the consensus is Magnum primers.  Is there a reason for this?  Just curious.  I'm assuming because of about 24 gr. of powder vs. most pistol loads are 8-12 grains, etc.

Thanks.

The amount of powder may play a role, but has less to do with it than the type of powder.  H110 wants a magnum primer for consistant ignition (hotter).  There are many variables,  and some claim to not use them,  but Hogden says to use them so that's what I use (CCI 350s). I've heard it said that H110 can be temp. sensative and needs the magnum primer in colder temps,  but I don't know that to be fact.

H110/W296 needs a heavy crimp and magnum primers for consistent ignition. Especially in cold weather.  This month's issue of Handloader magazine has a good article on primer usage with H110/W296 and other magnum powders. My experience with it and 240 gr XTPs in my .44 mags is that best accuracy comes before max velocity. This is in my 629s, my lever carbines and the 77/44 bolt carbine. I'd rather have the best accuracy and give up 50-80 FPS. The .44 mag is enough gun for deer and hogs even when loaded moderately. For hogs, many prefer the 300 gr XTPs over the 240s in .44 because of better penetration thru the tough shoulder plate.
"where'd you get the gun....son?"

H110/W296 needs a magnum primer for consistent ignition. They say it's hard to ignite. Also H110 is not to be dowloaded, it's either a max load or use another powder because of the fact it's hard to ignite.
Other loads I like in the 44 Mag with a 240gr bullet jacketed or cast is the tried and trusted load of 22grains of 2400 and 21.5 grains of Accurate 4100.
I don't like to shoot fast powders in magnum calibers at all.
