That may have been the image, but it was a false one, held by people who confused Chevy Chase with President Ford. Fact is, Jerry Ford was in very good shape as President, and probably the most athletic of any than any pres in 20th century, until Dubya came along. The 'Ford was a bumbler' bit is simply untrue, even if oft-repeated by lazy journalists and gullible readers who'll believe anything.

Actually that's not quite true; the 'news' media guys who first published it knew the truth but they worked together to make it a sucessful political lie.  Quale had walked into a grade school classroom followed by the media clowns, where the teacher was conducting an open spelling exercise.  Quayle took her hand written 'flash cards' with the words and simply accepted the way she spelled "potatoe" as the way she had taught - and that part was no doubt true - but it was the teacher who screwed up, not Dan.  But he was made to look like a dummy for accepting what the teacher had actually done.  MSM = 'propaganda wing of the Dem  Party'.
 
Anyone who actually passed high school English prior to the 70s knows more/better English grammer than most college trained 'journalists' writing today.
