Ruger SBH sights
« on: January 11, 2004, 04:48:22 PM »
Picked up my new SBH today and find that the sights do not adjust low enough with either factory loads or my max handloads. With the rear sight bottomed out it still shoots 3" high at 25 yds. Question is , can I file down enough of the rear sight to make up this difference ? Also anybody ever used a peep blade on the gun and what are your ideas on how they work , more accurate , quicker on target ? Also who makes a peep blade ? So far I have found only one made by " ONE RAGGED HOLE ". This gun has a 7.5 " barrel and will be used as a secondary gun when I'm hunting with my rifle or when on my quad because it will be qiucker to bring into action than a cased rifle for close range shooting . No plans to mount a scope on it as as close range as I'll be shooting - 50 yds or less, iron sights are fine. Thanks for any and all help.

Thanks in advance, Dan

You would shoot an animal from the back of your Quad? Do you know how that sounds to people who hate ATV's??

Man I hate ATV's. No offense.

My SBH shot low also and I found that Ruger would send me a taller front blade at no cost to compensate the low shots. My smith installed it for 20 $.

Super Rat,

The plan is to spot and stalk and that is how I have hunted for the last  40 years . After packing out three deer this year, all uphill I bought a quad for packing out animals only. I'm getting too old plus I have two discs  that I've been putting off surgery on for over 20 years.  Don't know where your from but here in CA game is usually mighty scarce on public land and if I get the opportunity for a shot while on the quad I will take it. No I won't be sitting on the quad at the shot !

You ever killed game close to your vehicle? Bet you have , my closest was 2 miles, longest around 5 miles. Don't judge me , you don't know me or my situation!

My SBH has the front site blade held in place with a roll pin.  I measured the height of the sight, contacted Ruger, and they mailed me a taller blade.  Tap out the roll pin, exchange sight blades, use the sight base to mark the new blade to drill.  Use the sight base hole to select correct drill bit size, drill the blade and install.  About 10 minutes including cleanup.

Good luck,

Steve   :D

Hey Dan sorry to sound judgemental.

My experiences with people on ATV's around here, North-Eastern Washington state, has not been good. We have some real nice back-country areas with Moose, Grizz, and even Caribou in them, and all the secondary roads, logging roads, old roads and trails are closed off and designated no motorized vehicle areas to lessen the impact on these animals.

However, as it's really too remote to be patrolled by anyone, MANY of the ATV people insist on driving around the barricades and driving these roads. It's really a bummer to hike four, five, or more miles into one of these beutiful areas, be sitting by a stream, and "putt-putt-putt" here comes Bubba on his Quad with a cooler full of beer on the back. Yes, we even find where they toss their bottles and cans. And these aren't even guys with any kind of disability, young twenty-something guys and gals. It seems that around here, many of the road hunters have taken up ATV's.

So, that's my experience with ATV's!!

I hear what yer saying, and my hunting partners and I have talked about getting an ATV to haul game out, on the condition that it stays on the trailer until game is actually killed. Actually I'm working on an old Suzuki 185 someone gave me for just that purpose, that I can carry on the back of my mini-motorhome hunting rig.

Right off hand I can't really remember shooting game close to the rig. Of course I would if I could, although I would not shoot anything from the road. But I like to hike pretty far in, and get away from the road hunters, and the ones that stay close to their rigs.

So, no offense intended, and have fun with that SBH. I shot a deer with my 7.5" once, at 120+ yards. Dropped like a rock!

Super Rat,

Sorry I got on you , seems we both think about the same on the subject on ATVS . Personally I like the NO VEHICLE ACCESS signs, don't usually see anybody after I'm a mile from my truck, a couple oh hundred yds when I hunt downhill. Got a spot I hunted 6 or so times during our deer season, saw bucks every time but one and NOBODY else except on the ridge line a mile above me where the dirt road is.

Have another spot that allows ORV, don't hunt deer there but there are pigs about 3 or 4 miles downhill from where we park the truck. Use my quad as transportation there as the old ranch roads are rutted so bad a truck would not make it. Thats my play area ( trips with wife, son or daughter) and the real reason for getting my Ruger SBH , not too concerned about four legged critters, just the two legged type! Always have a pig tag or two when I go in there, just in case.

Take it easy and good shooting, Dan
