Sounds like the place to be!
« on: November 01, 2011, 10:02:43 AM »
This sounds like the place to be. I heard of this place on the news a couple days ago and have been researching it since. The town is called Williston North Dakota. You should do a Google search on it. The place is a modern day gold rush except it not gold it's oil. If it were spring time I would consider going there to work. They will be building a lot of homes. The guys working on the rigs are making up to $100,000 a year with no place to live. I hate the cold anymore and don't even want to think of spending a winter there in my trailer. You never know though I could end up there in the spring time though. I am just looking for a place with a lot of work. Dale

Saw it on the news. If I were you, that's where I'd be heading. Not as warm as Florida, but better chance of getting a job.

I drove through there in August.  I felt like I was driving through Chicago!  It was booming like nothing I have ever seen in North Dakota before.  Cars and trucks zooming everywhere!  They had a big sign on one of the buildings advertising for drivers.

Good luck,

I bet the construction has or will very soon will slow to a crawl for the winter. That climate is no place to be living in a travel trailer even if I did find work. I checked out their average temps during the winter and they seem to be at least another 20 degrees colder than the Pittsburgh area and Pittsburgh is cold enough for me!!!! It might make a good summer job or if I can find a trim carpenter job working indoors durring the winter and a warm place to live. I think my trailer would eat up a 20 pound bottle of propane every other day just trying to stay warm. Of corse if the money was right I guess I could afford that. Dale

Forget the RV up there in winter. You'd be better served with a yurt or igloo.

Its been booming for a bit now, good place for quality welders as well, but your camper trailer will be very cold in the winter, the wind REALLY howls over there in ND.

Joplin is in Missouri. Tornado repairs. Should also be a lot of work coming in an area of Alabama thats a mile and half wide by 120 miles long, starting in Tuscaloosa heading northeast.

The last 3 winters I spent quite a bit of time in the ND oilfield minus 18 with 35 to 40 mph winds and white out blizzards .
Doing repower engine swaps on drilling rigs with only a space heater and a pickup for warmth until you get that first big generator set and plumbed in.
Good times LOL
There's plenty of money to be made there for sure.

Ive stayed in tents below 0 and worked many a day in below 0 weather. Just had to dress for and prepare.
Give me a camper and I could stay anywhere. Youve got heat and can add heat, they make all kinds of heaters.
Get a good sleeping bag and clothes before you start and you want have a problem.

Saw lots of signs saying "Oil Field Workers Wanted" as I passed through North Dakota two weeks ago.

Dale, check it out.  They may need carpenters now.  You might even be able to retrain to an oil field worker.  You could possiably make more money than as a Carpenter.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Boom town jobs and boom town prices. Best advice I have for you is to bring your own housing or be prepared to pay dearly. There are jobs a plenty though.

Fellow in hunting camp this weekend told me the Bakery Boy facility in Dickenson ND has 50 job openings right now. He works for them so I would tend to believe him. He related to me they had to hire electricians from Nebraska to come do work as all the local outfits were covered up, and those arriving were often tempted away to the rigs.

You don't need to work the rigs either. You can pick up the jobs that those working the rigs are leaving vacant. Only problem is that those are typically the lower paying jobs, but depending on a persons needs that may be just fine. The often heard statement is that truckdrivers are earning 100k a year.

Finally be aware that where there is money there is crime. Again, as I understand it, the area is awash in drugs, prostitution and all the crime that thouands of single men with fat wallets generate. I have heard this from three dissparate sources and I wasn't asking about crime at the time either.

So buy a coat and some warm socks and get yourself ahead of the spring time rush of pansies. ;D
