HANDI success stories

Hey everybody:
I know we are all on the same team, but I would like to break us down into caliber specific success stories.... Please post a pic and or tell a story about your hunt with specifics on which caliber Handi, Huntsman, NEF or H&R shotgun you took your deer or elk or whatever you were hunting with. I hope to add my own in a week or two since season opens here in MN Nov 5th.
So please share and lets see which caliber is responsible for the most game,  Should be kind of fun to see pics but also see just who puts some meat on the table.( you varmint hunters just as well come along for the ride, we are all one big family, and it may keep winter from getting so long.)   Please post only stories or photos from FALL 2011/WINTER OF 2012.
If you already posted it in a different thread this fall add it here too if you want.

Two pics, both animals shot with a 45-70 handi. Hand loaded cartridges, 35grn IMR4198 pushing a 405grn remington soft point. Full through and through penetration on both animals. The 45-70 is king!! The bear was shot this spring but I posted it anyways.

Nice pics DaveW good job!  And Pete if you have some broken jug pics you can post them as long as they were shot with a Handi... :)  Thanks for getting it started guys.

tha grandboys and i, be use'n tha 45/70's for open'n day.
one might not bea handi tho.... so j3's out :(  he got the tropical #1 ruger
i gave him coupla months ago. jo-david be shoot'n his dad's 22" with 405gr like me
in my trapper ;D
grandaughter madison, be shoot'n her prize 7.62x54 handi she got special built by her dad
his last hitch in !! so we ready for tha season to begin here in tha swamp.
there dad. (j2) is expected on the 27th....... then it will be totally on !!!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D 8)
it will be great to have my boy home for the holidays....... 8)

John- I guess your Thanksgiving will be the 27th! Good to hear he'll be home. Sorry to hear he has to use one of those "other guns", but they sure are pretty... I can't wait till season gets rolling here. I have a feeling the 45-70 is going to be one of the top dogs. But my 45-70 barrel is off and the light 7-08 is on. In New Mexico we only get one tag per year per person. I usually hunt with a bow or front stuffer. I tried a sidekick one year, but it just wasn't right for me. It shot good I just don't like inlines. I hunt with a custom TC renegade. Maybe some day I will get to hunt with one of my handis. :-\

Those are some nice mulies! Thanks for sharing. I was going to post earlier that if there was no Maxi representation they would have to divulge the secret handshake but since one put some meat on the table, you saved the maxi clubs secret.... for now.  ;)  Hope you get one with a Handi next time... But you did well with the TC.

OK  here are the standings so far.....45-70 has 2,   maxi has 1, and .280 has 1,
I am not going to chime in after every post since I will drive you all nuts but I will try to give a tally now and then so we all kind of have an idea of the "score". I hope a few stubs get in here and some non- off the shelf handis just to mix it up a little.  Thanks  thejanitor

45-70 handie-2 cow elk 3 mule deer,  444 1 cow elk 2 deer, 243 5 deer, 223 more yotes and rodents than I can count sence I bought my first handie in 1996.

Well today was opener here in MN and I hate to say I didn't even see one but I have a fun story, We left our stands this morning to go do a drive on state land, I dropped off the guys who were going to walk through and went to park the truck and get to where I was going to post. Well there were 4 trucks parked at the other end when I gt there so I got my orange on and grabbed the 7-08 and saw a guy and his kid walking up to his truck, The kid had a single shot .243 and I said COOL I love single shots and showed him mine, and I asked where they were standing before and he said just in the woods a ways on a finger that sticks into the swampy part, and he knew where 3 or the 4 truck groups were hunting, and the kids Grandma was where I was supposed to work my way to before the drivers started in... So I told them we had a group moving through and they may want to move back to their stand for another half hour. I changed my plan and moved into the woods 300 yds from where I was supposed to be but the other folks were in there so... ya go with it.  Anyway After getting situated and ready I heard shots back in the direction of where I had left the guy and his boy. Well I heard when we came out the 12yr old with the .243 got a 10 point buck :D
So We were headed back to the truck to leave and I saw him walking with his dad to get the truck.... BIG SMILE.  So it isn't my handi success story but I know of a kid who showed me his .243 Rossi in the woods who probably is having trouble sleeping because he got a great buck today.   - thejanitor

As our season wont open till the 16th I have nothing from this year...
 
But last...  Started out with a couple yodle dogs..
This is a October 243 dog..

 
This is a late October I was out with the Hornet and came across a fisher and a blond dog...

 
Then opening weekend, another coyote. This one almost red!

 
  Then I finished the season with the 454 again and a doe, mid December, just meat in the freezer...

 
Nothing good deer wise.. But my buddie had a good year with his handis too!! Hunting same property as I. He has a right to be grinning, those are a couple very nice bucks!

Well I have a pic of my daughters buck with her light wt 7mm-08 Brian56 built for her last spring. She hunted alone this morning and I got a call, she was walking to the stand and this buck stepped into the trail at 35ish yards and her Handi did a great number on it. (Modification- I was told it was a measured 51 yards and it ran 36 yds after the shot...)
Some of you may recall a year ago I posted about how she has my dads wood stocked model 70 .270 and loves it, but it is too heavy for her to hold well without a rest, so I worked on getting this rifle put together for this fall, and she pulled up with no problem taking the shot. So it was worth the effort to make her a user friendly rifle.
 
Hope to post more success later this season.   :)

Congrats to your daughter and you Brent, that's great! I'm working on makin meat with the 35 Whelen Imp, hunted all day saturday for elk, saw nothing, not even a recent track, going out again tomorrow in a different area, best of luck on your hunt.  ;)

I can take care of the 30/30, my grandson who turned 11 last week moved up this year from a 357mag to the 30/30, a barrel bought here I might add. I used a reduced load of 37.5 gr of WW748 and a 125 gr Rem PSP that should only produce 2450 or so MV. He did not wait for the deer to turn broadside and shot her quartering toward him at about 40 yards. It was a large doe and it totally destroyed everything inside her, entered just behind the right shoulder, exited through the left flank. Very messy. Does lay to rest worries any might have about "reduced power loads". This was the Missouri youth season, my turn next week. 1st up, the 500 S&W.

I dont have any pics, but you can add 2 does, and a 5 point buck taken with a Hornet handy, all bang flops, and a 200 pound boar hog taken with a Huntsman 50 cal muzzle loader, also a bang flop.All but one of the does were taken at 25-30 yards. One doe was a long shot at about 105, shot in the ear with the Hornet.

Good start to our deer season.

Went today for the opener of our primitive weapon doe only season with my 35 Remington Handi. 200 gr Core Lokt. DRT. Didn't take a step


Found the bullet too. She was facing me. Bullet entered her chest and traveled down her body, almost leaving out her rear leg quarter

  Thanks every one, And feel free to switch to your next favorite and fill your next tag if you are in a location you can...  Where are the antelope hunters and the 22-250 or .243s?  I am guessing the 45-70 count will be MUCH higher, oh and we don't have a 30-06 in the contest yet.... Where is SourDough? Didn't he get animals earlier this fall with his -06? ANd Petemi once you get started you will use one of the interesting 38-55 or something don't you?
