Well tonight after work I decided to grab my old 7-08 with the standard barrel because it has a variable scope for sitting on a larger field, I had been trying to get my deer with the new light contour 7-08 but it only has a 2.5 power scope and as nice as it is in the woods it really isn't a field scope.... So wouldn't you know it I got a nice big doe with the 2004 7-08. 100- 110 yds neck shot (because it was all I saw a head and neck in the grass) with a 120 gr bullet and a load from this group with H4350. thejanitor

Tonight we *party hunted on private land and I Filled Grandmas tag with a nice 11 point buck, the rack is not huge but wow it looks nice and a first for me - it had both brow tines split, so it was cool And the BEST part is I used the new light 7-08 and had a entrance against the back of the shoulder and exited just ahead of the diaphram.
My friend who owns the land shot a huge 9 point that was chasing a doe, and when his deer went down this buck started in behind the doe and they ran past me. So we had a great night hunting in the snow.

* Got a couple questions on "Party hunt" -here in MN when you buy a license it is good until the end of that specified season (at least for deer), once you use your tag portion you may still hunt as long as you are with a person who still has a un-filled tag. Thus the group or person you are with are a party. There are several rules listed but this is legal here.

My daughter & I took these two little whitetails with her youth model 7mm-08 Handi yesterday.

They were laying down in tall grass.  At 500 yards the antlers looked like dark weeds.  At 350 they became antlers.  There I dropped my pack and we proceeded on hands & knees, stopping occasionally to raise up to see if we had a better view.  At 197 we still couldn't see enough for a looong head shot off her sticks.

We sat there whispering our next moves when I noticed one had stood up.  I whispered "He's up!  He's up!  Shoot em."

She put a 140 gr. Partition through both lungs.  He ran about 30 yards and started in on his floor routine.  Meanwhile, his buddy stood there watching, giving me enough time to whisper "Can I use your gun?"  I slipped in another shell, scrunched down behind the short youth stock with high comb pad, lined up low in the chest & touched the trigger.

I had forgotten how light the factory trigger job is and the shot surprised me.  My bullet busted one humerus going in, ripped through the brisket and smashed the other humerus going out.  He nose dived on the spot & didn't get up.

I dragged my littler one over to her bigger one for the photo op.

Chalk two more up to the 7mm-08!
Cordially,

MTGlass

Question for MTGlass, how do ya get the deer out there where you hunt? Are ATVs or trucks allowed? Or is it "wilderness" with no motor vehicles allowed, making you pack the game out?

Those are some great looking deer there.  Does the one that ran into my wifes car count?  I did take the back straps off and my new handi .308 was in the car.

Got this sausage doe this afternoon with the 444. This rifle has been fired 3 times (2 last season) at deer and brought 3 deer to the freezer for me since I've had it. That 444 round is a killer.

I was hoping to get a chance to contribute and I had been hunting with my 45-70 but just couldn't get a shot presented to me, so this morning I pulled out my 45LC which I reamed to .454 Casull and out the door this morning around 4:30 am.

Got settled into my stand that nobody has sat in yet this year, and it's not really anyones favorite, but I just had a gut feeling and decided to give it a try.

Just about daylight I noticed three deer slowly feeding their way toward me down the jeep trail about 80 yards out.  I couldn't quite tell what they were since it wasn't light enough so as the minutes passed I noticed one was a doe and the other two were bucks with one being a very large bodied animal.

As he stepped from the shadows I had to wait for the smaller buck to clear, and then wait for the bigger buck to turn broadside, I then steadily leveled my 45LC Classic Carbine and 4X Nikon on the bucks shoulder.

As soon as I shot the big bodied 8 pt buck buckled with his rear hitting the ground first and then the rest of him followed.   I didn't even see him kick, so the .454 Casull loaded with a 300 grain Hornady XTP Magnum bullet did it's job at what I paced it off to be 68 steps.

After skinning the buck I noticed the bullet had gone through the Left shoulder, clipped the spine, and went through the opposite shoulder, and I found the perfectly mushroomed intact bullet just under the skin on the opposite side.

My little Classic Carbine isn't new to this since I've taken out six hogs and one coyote at 130 yards with the 45LC configuration, but this is the first for the Casull.

Great morning to say the least.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Every time I take the camera I seem to get skunked!   Leave it at home guess what happens?  ;D

I hung him in our skinning tree shortly after picking up my hunting partner and skinned and quartered it up for the ride home.   It makes it nice and easy to disgard the bones and hide and such rather than bringing it home, and my coyotes appreciate it as well, but I do have the bullet and antlers so I'll see if I can't post them later.  ;)

Similar story with not such a happy ending this morning. I was sitting in my stand this morning about 7:15 minding my own business. A look south reveals 3 deer heading up the drag trail towards me. I see a cow horn spike and 2 does. I wait and get steadied up on a nice size doe, squeeze the trigger and she just flops in the road. I'm thinking this 444 is the S***, I watch her a min and when she gets done kicking start down. I get about 30 or so yards from her and she takes off. I can tell shes hurt pretty bad but cant get a shot. Two different dogs and 3 1/2 hours later I called it off. I dont know what happened, the shot looked good. I'd love to have recovered that one just to see exactly where I'd hit her. What can I say, things happen that arent expected.

That's a tough one, and I've been there and done that, and it leaves a bad taste in your mouth, but like you said, things happen!
