Similar story with not such a happy ending this morning. I was sitting in my stand this morning about 7:15 minding my own business. A look south reveals 3 deer heading up the drag trail towards me. I see a cow horn spike and 2 does. I wait and get steadied up on a nice size doe, squeeze the trigger and she just flops in the road. I'm thinking this 444 is the S***, I watch her a min and when she gets done kicking start down. I get about 30 or so yards from her and she takes off. I can tell shes hurt pretty bad but cant get a shot. Two different dogs and 3 1/2 hours later I called it off. I dont know what happened, the shot looked good. I'd love to have recovered that one just to see exactly where I'd hit her. What can I say, things happen that arent expected.

I feel your pain. I say a little prayer right before I squeeze the trigger "Lord please don't make me have to track it." He doesn't always grant me my prayer, but a haven't not recovered one since I started using it.

I am willing to bet I will get at least a skunk or two after we move back to Wyoming next month.  I have never done any coyote calling.  I could be something I have to try.

One more doe this evening with the 35rem. She was limpming. Think she had been hit by a car. Front shoulder was banged up but the shot cleared both shoulder. :(

I'm really starting to love this caliber. This one ran about 10 yards and laid down. They just don't run far.

And I'm also wearing the same shirt I was wearing monday when I shot my opening day doe. Guess its my lucky shirt. :D

Here is my success.  A 6 point.  I was shooting my Handi 30-30.  Range was 50 yards or so.  Neck shot.  The animal dropped instantly.

Interesting results so far!

It's kind of surprise that the 7mm08 is in the lead and beating out the old reliable .243 as well as the 45-70 the 30-30 and the 35 Rem although it's still early and a lot of season to go.

I've owned a 7-08 in a Handi and I loved the cartridge and the rifle, and I kick myself for selling it, but you know how that goes.

Glad to see all those pistol calibers getting in on the action!

Question for MTGlass, how do ya get the deer out there where you hunt? Are ATVs or trucks allowed? Or is it "wilderness" with no motor vehicles allowed, making you pack the game out?

We were on a Block Management Area (BMA); public access to private land.  Rules specified walk-in hunting only.  Rules didn't specify provisions for retrieval so we asked the landowner and were allowed to drive in for retrieval.  Public lands are another story.  We have to be prepared for lots of manual labor.
Cordially,

MTGlass
