The .22 Hornet is calibre that I discovered later in life. It has become such a favored calibre...I would even consider it to be an Essential Calibre for the shooting that I do and enjoy.

I love my Handi Hornet! I do think it is one that ranks up there with the 45-70 as far as accurate and once you have it you don't know why you didn't own it sooner. Lots of fun!

This is the 8pt (10 legally with the stuff on the back) shot 9 Dec 2011.  I shot this fella @ 70+ yards with a BC 45-70 and home roll's with the 325 gr Hornady FTX over a less than Max load of AA2520.  Bullet performance was less than optimal.  My youngest son has been lusting over the rifle for years now so for Christmas he inherited it.  I absolutely loved the look on his face, we are going hunting for a week after the 1st.  I hope he has several more to up the tally for the Buffalo Gun's.

Hey Handiholics- I just spent an hour trying to account for each shot to see what all got put on the table or on the fur stretcher. I think I got them all up to this point.
DEER: 106
Roe Buck:1
Bear: 1
Buffalo:1
Javalina:1
Coyote:9
Antelope:1
Turkey:2
Grouse:1
Squirrel:5
Hare:1
Hog :7
Fox:2
Ram:1

This isn't the end, just a "fun fact" as they say. Keep posting as winter progresses and maybe the coyote fox number can jump a ways yet. I know I plan to add some rabbits later with the 20 ga. so if you do also let us all know. Thanks Gang!  thejanitor

Well lets' add the 38-55 target to the list. Got what would have been a 6 point but only had one side of his rack ???  Got in my stand and in less than 10 minutes he came walking buy. Shot behind shoulder at 35 yards and ran less than 50 yards. Didn't make much of a hole. I guess he was just to close.

My 20 gauge smoothbore has accounted for about 30 ducks this year and hopefully that will grow by 10-15 more before the season closes on Jan 10th. Today was the best day yet this season with 3 mallards and a goose. Thats with a 19" cylinder choke gun all birds hunted over decoys and shots inside 30 yards.

That being said no question it is not fair to compare large game species like deer, moose and coyotes etc to waterfowl and small game from a number to number perspective so the 20 gauge smoothbore doesn't unfairly pull ahead of the rifles this is what i feel is fair but will leave it up to you to decide since its not my thread.

approx 30 ducks divided by 6( limit per day in my area) = 5 for the scoreboard results.

Adam_R - I will give you the 30 score but it will be in ( ) marks as ducks...  There was a grouse in the original count but without looking I am not sure if it was shot with shot or a bullet. SO I will add the ducks and any further animals shot with "shot" can be in the tally in the ( ) marks. Success is success. :)   Duck pics would be fun too, so next trip out maybe get us a duck pic with your H&R in there for fun. Not required but I like people to see what we can do with these single shots.
My son got a grouse with his 20 ga and I got one snow shoe hare.

Hi Janitor

I will try and take some more pics next time out, I posted on the shotgun forum last week with a few photo's from that days duck hunt, i have reposted those here, but it was taken prior to chopping the barrel down so I guess i should try and get a few more pics with the handier handi if sucessful on Monday's hunt. Don't normally have a camera with me during river hunting since the last one went got toasted while kayaking my wife has banned me from having it while hunting, fishing, kayaking etc. etc. and usually when i get home i just want to process the birds, clean up my gear and have lunch.

Adam- That pic is just fine! There is no reason to get a camera wet and ruin it, I just like this whole thread and as many pics as we can that truely depict our hunts. So thank you for this pic and don't chance ruining a camera.... Kyak and camera just don't belong in the same phrase.  Thank you and Happy New Year!  thejanitor

Another benefit of this thread, it helped me decide what rifles to hunt with next year!  ;D Thanks T J!

I just compared the rifles I have and haven't killed a deer with to the number of critters killed by each caliber on the list! Look for the cartridges with the fewest kills and TA DA! I've got my rifles lines up for next year and can start working up loads!  8) No indecision...

They are:
.25-06 (heck! they ain't even on the list! first rifle up  ;) )
.280 (shoot! I got 2 - 280 barrels to play with!  :D )
.45 Colt, &
.500 S&W.

.38-55 (I already killed a deer with my 38-55 but since it's on the list now I'll recheck my load and keep it available for a back up! )

2012 is gonna be a great year!  ;D

Well, I failed miserably on my quest... Arriving in South Texas on Saturday morning, I had to take off my long sleeve shirt. Then I spent the rest of the weekend in shorts and a tee shirt, until this morning. It got cool over night and deer started moving for our final sit. And, the same 8yo who shot the javelina a couple of weeks ago let the hammer down on his first South Texas buck, a 4.5 year old cull!

So, chalk up one more to the shorty topper 30-30.

WELCOME .270 Win another new caliber joins us.
Wow shorts and short sleeves,- I plowed snow for a couple hours.... I wish I was where you were. Good job for the young one with that 30-30.
And Gendocs 45-70 is back in action, although I am not sure it has been out of the action much this season.  :)
Daniel8370 the one for 2011 counted, sorry the 2010 should almost get one for coolest rack, but it was a past season. Thanks for the pic.
