New IHMSA Shooter
« on: January 12, 2004, 05:08:04 AM »
Shot my first IHMSA match Saturday - now I'm hooked. Shot small bore, field pistol, and big bore; all standing production, iron sights. Didn't shoot as well as I'd hoped, but had a great time. First 30 sec load time, I fat fingered every round, dropped one in the dirt, fed one cockeyed into the cylinder.

But I'll tell you, the best feeling in the world is dropping a Ram at 200m with a handgun!

Afterwards, I took my son over to the bullseye range to let him throw some .22s down range. I tried a few myself, and found the experience empty. I'm ruined now.

Next weekend, Sunday January 18th is the Arizona Presidents Match. We'll shoot all those things you mentioned. It is at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility on the north side of Phoenix. Let me know and I can help you with finding your way around.

We had 30 to 40 shooters at our local match yesterday. Should be more than that next weekend.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to miss that one. I'm a Pastor, so I'm otherwise committed on Sundays, but can you recommend a good resource to look up IHMSA Matches in Arizona? I hear there's one coming up in Tucson.

Thanks,
Rob

Dell Taylor, Region 6 Director
Phone (801) 566-2939
DIAMONDAX@email.msn.com

I think Dell is in Arizona. If not he is the Director for the region including Arizona. I shoot NRA Hunter Pistol so I don't really know the IHMSA people. If you go to the IHMSA.com web site you can find contact info. I sent them an e-mail and got a call back.

Dennis Taylor is the AZ state director.  E-mail dtayloraz@nraonline.com

Major Golden is the match director in Tombstone.  He will have info on other AZ matches.

Welcome to IHMSA!

Major's the guy who dragged me out to the match! He also coached me through the big bore course, which was great. (I think he's excited to have a shooting pastor.)

BTW, you could build a respectable sized single family home from the awards he's received for shooting over the last 40+ years. I consider myself blessed to have the benefit of that experience coaching me.

Spent a day & a half in Tombstone with Major last year.  He gave my family & I the royal treatment & grand tour of the town.  Even had the opportunity to shoot a match.  I agree that Major's trophy room is truly impressive.

I feel fortunate to have him in my life.  An enriching experience.
