dont know how you southern mi guys do it!
« on: November 04, 2011, 10:59:57 PM »
Just came back from a trip down to an arbor. I was like an caged animal down there. Just way to many people and not enough space. I had to chuckle at driving along on 75 and seeing deer blinds in farm fields within a 100 yards of the freeway. Sure not my idea of hunting but i guess you have to do what you have to do to hunt. At one time when i was a young lad my father had to go to pontiac to work because he had 5 kids and no jobs up here and was a breath away from moving down there. Luckily something came up in the UP and our move was west in the UP and not south. I cant even imagine have to live in that rat race. I allways kind of shook my head at guys from southern michigan retireing and moving up into this snow hell but ill take the snow and cold anyday over that. Go north of flint and its like someone turned off a light switch and your in a differnt state. Believe it or not this is the first time ive been south of grayling since 1978 when i got out of the service and hopefully it will be the last until i get planted.

Well I'm in Mt. Pleasant and agree with you about the southern part, but there's no way I wanna be stuck up in the northern part either. lol  Here I get all the benefits of light traffic, jobs, hunting places (and ability to use rifles) and light on the crime.  ;)  I like to visit up north, but don't think I'd like living there.  We have an 80 acre farm, so can hunt easily though too.  If I had to hunt public land, north would probably be better.  ;)

Like Tacklebury I've got it pretty good.  All the hunting, fishing and horse riding I could ever handle right out my back door.  Low crime and no nearby / visible neighbors too.  I do have to deal with the rat-race retards on the highway and city for work though.  Sure couldn't live there.

I do like the UP, never hunted up there though.  Would like to do a week agian soon.

I realize the UP isnt for everyone either. Thank God for giving us all the snow and cold that keeps alot of the riff raft away. It can be trying in the winter especially now that im getting older. But theres only about a 100miles of 4 lane roads in the whole up and probably less then a 100 buildings bigger the 4 storys. My deer blind is probably 15 miles from the nearest paved road and that road gets about one car an hour on it any time other then hunting season. Our deer per square mile might be a tad less then some areas downstate but our yuppie per square mile ratio is a hell of alot less too!! Another nice thing is when we went downstate overnight i left the house open and the keys in the truck and didnt worry a bit. I dont remember the last time ive locked my house door or vehicle or even took the keys out of it in the UP.

Well, guess it is a good thing we don't all want to live in the same spot!  ;)  World would be a mighty tight place if we did.  You can leave everything unlocked here too, for the most part, albeit I don't risk it as many do.  hehe

Well I live in south east Michigan.  I grew up in Mid Michigan a bit north of Mt Pleasent. where I live now is a much better place to live during fire arm deer season that where I grew up. My dad claimed it was some thing in the air that turned those people into A Holes during that time. I don't know I got out of there and won't ever go back.
Got  a Place On big Bay De Noc where I have spent many a fire arm deer season. only seen 9 people in just over 16 years in the woods there. They were polite people not trying to chase you off your own hunk of taxes paid land like in Mid Michigan. One thing is the road stayed busy, Its like a bus route in the city, they go up to the turn around by the point then back to the village turn around and cruise back. Made me think of my younger days of crusing the town on Friday and Saturday night.

we get our share of them too and they dont all come from downstate like some will want you to believe. two years ago i was hunting my normal spot. They had logged near it and the old two track going into my blind from that back side wasnt useable because they just buried it in brush and small trees. So i went in from the main road side. Id been hunting that blind for 15 years and knew there were a couple guns hunting it from that end that camped there. Well they aparently got pissed that i was hunting there and by the way the road is 3 miles long and i hunt the complete oposite end of it then they do. They gave me dirty looks everyday i went by there camper and i just laughed it off. Well one day in muzzle loading season we had a storm and got nailed with about 2 feet of snow and the road was drifted in bad. I fought my way back in there the next night and when i came out there was a truck parked right in the middle of the road and nobody at camp. Now they had plowed the road right up to there camper and plowed a parking spot and then parked this truck 20 yards into the unplowed road. They had seen my tracks going only one way and had to know i was in there. I came out and no way could i get by. I had to walk 3.5 miles to camp. I was so pissed i took my dads truck and a tow chain and went back and drug there truck out of there all the way back to the main road and down the road about a 1/4 of a mile and left one nasty letter on the windsheid telling them next time theyd find it in the river. Good thing was that last year they didnt come back!! Now i found out those guys were from a town about 30 miles from there. There was also two guys from down state hunting about half way in between us and they were great guys. I even helped one drag out his deer with my jeep. So moral of the story is living in a certain area doesnt make you an ass hole you are born that way.

I enjoyed the thread, but could we keep the language so I don't feel embarrassed to show it to my wife and son?

Thanks!
