Game/Thief Cam
« on: November 05, 2011, 02:24:42 PM »
Been having a lot of vandalism and thievery at my isolated camp this year, would like to put a trail cam nearby but have no experience at all with them. I've read some on them and guess I should get a IR (no flash I think). Do they make any sounds or emit any light when they take picture ? I will probably put it up in a tree where hopefully no one will see it. Obviously would like a cheap one cause of the high chance of theft if spotted. Any ideas or suggestions ?

The IR game cams do emit a slight reddish light when they flash. Therefore I would place it somewhere inconspicuous so that it's left alone. Albeit expensive, there's a new camera made by Primos that doesn't emit any light nor make any shutter sounds.

Your other option is to use a non-functioning camera to lure the vandals into stealing it and catch them on another well hidden camera. I had this idea and found a broken camera here on GBO, but the deadbeat never mailed it to me. >:(

Perhaps you could tape over the flash and use it for daylight only? A lot of fellows have posted on these forums on trespassers shooting their cameras up in trees so not to be on film. I imagine the flash clues them in.

That's not a bad idea. As long as the SD card is not damaged, the pics should still be recoverable. I would think that a shotgun is about the only thing one could use to get it. It's anyone's guess where the card is inside the camera box.

If you are having regular problems, you might consider camping out yourself and forget the camera.  We caught a couple poachers once on our lease, and cabled and locked their vehicle to a tree, then went and called the sheriff.  That way we didn't have to get physical with anyone and risk someone getting shot.

A good bear safe will protect your SD from a shooting.  I use http://www.custom1enterprises.com/ safes.  They are built like a tank with 11 gauge steel.  I lag bolt them to the three with a hardened lag bolt and use a master lock shrouded lock plus a python cable.  Anything can be stolen but this will not be easy.

I would put up an IR camera and hide it the best you can.  They will not flash but have a red glow.  So if someone is not looking right at it they will not see it.

Another option is to get a time lapse camera, granted they will only take pics during the daylight hours.  Primos has a decent one that can be found for $80 on sale.  The new Spypoint Tiny will give you the option of an IR camera or a time lapse camera.  Great camera!

A little hint, if you place a camera, make sure you take a pic of yourself on it, holding a poster that says
"if this isnt the person dropping off this card call XXX_XXXX"
Many folks have been busted getting the photos printed off the card this way. When they come to get the prints, the sheriff is waiting :-)

The hunting club i am a member of in Louisiana has a little over 6000 acres, and 40 members. We regularly use trail cams all year long to catch trespassers. There are several different roads onto our club with quite a few landowners of our leased land so having locked gates doesnt work well, there are also highline and pipeline companies and timber companies who need access. We usually catch 10 to 12 people a year who do not belong on our leased land. They are all charged with trespassing and the damages we get from the fines go toward upkeep of our roads and any improvements we make. Louisiana is a state in which you dont have to have posted signs or paint or fences. You know if you dont belong so ....you pay for it if you are caught.

Bushnell has a new one out that has the no glow flash. I picked up a couple to cover a remote property  were I store building supplies.. Any steel, alum or cooper used to get stolen. They work well and give a nice photo.  Ask the 3 guys I have had arrested in the last year. You can get the Bushnell for around $ 200.00 to $ 225.00. Batteries last for ever and 40 to 50 ft flash at night. I also use some to watch a camp I have, also have warning signs up. Have gotten photos of people there looking  but no theft problem. I can usually find out who they are so I send them a photo of them self, and explain that I would rather not see then again unless Invited . So far this has worked well. I have solar (12v/120v )and have been trying to find a system for a reasonable price, but most systems are geared for commercial, on grid use,I need one that is motion activated and  a power miser.
