peep sight
« on: November 05, 2011, 06:28:45 PM »
Never had one before and been thinking about trying one, putting it on a M-92 44 mag. and M-92 454 casull. Any ideas on a good one and contact #. And how are they in low light hunting condisions and in thick cover?

I put a Marbles tang peep sight on my M92 .357 Mag. Mine didnt have the third hole for tang sights so I had to drill and tap one myself. It was pretty easy and its a good sight. For low light conditions you could just unscrew the apperature and use the sight body for the peep. Here is a link to Marbles page. http://www.marblearms.com/standardPeepTang_info.html  There is a video there that goes over the install too. If your guns have the third hole in the tang you are good to go and its a drop in intallation.

I have several of the Marbles tang sights on my lever guns. I buy the sights with the windage adjustment in the base of the tang sight, which in my opinion makes them better than the Lyman tang sights.

Steve Young at Steve's Guns is making an adapter for the Skinner Sight (www.skinnersights.com) LoPro that fits into safety hole on top of the Rossi Model 92 bolt.  Another option is the Skinner Barrel Dovetail Mounted Peep sight.  We make them in Blue, Brass, and Stainless.

If you do use a receiver sight and need to replace your existing rear sight with a dovetail filler blank, we have them available at www.skinnersights.com on our special items page.

Is your M-92 a Rossi? It seems that the dovetail is non standard on the Rossi. When I replaced my front sight and put the dovetail filler in the rear sight slot I had to shim them with strips of aluminum pop cans otherwise the stuff just fell right out of the dovetails. I dont know if anyone else has encountered this problem?

Both of mine 44 mag. and 454 are Puma Rossi's, got the peep sight, SS follower, ejector spring and DVD today,, only ordered one peep just in case I don't like it. Going to install it and start action job tonight. Not sure how much it will tighten my groups at 100 yrds., right now I'm getting around 4" I know to some that's not that great but for my ageing eyes it's deer in the freezer.

I prefer the Williams Foolproof myself.  I first put one on a Winchester 94 in 1964 and, while I have used various others also over the years, I keep coming back to the Foolproof.  Take the aperture out if you want a ghost ring.  Only trouble I have had was a number of years ago I was bellied down for a prone shot at a little buck about 120 yards away, but I couldn't see anything through the peep.  Upon examination I found a leaf had got in the aperture.  I unscrewed the aperture, blew the leaf out from the front, put it back in and shot the deer.  Both he and his sister or girlfriend were standing there watching me through the whole operation!   ;D

Hawk it's nice when a plane comes together, installed there peep sight tonight  not impressed the follower is to large for the mag tube, the peep sight has A LOT of slop in it can move up and down about 1/8" rotates from about 6 o'clock to about 4 o'clock position, and yes locking nut is tight, it's the part that fits down into the receiver,Will be calling Steve's gunz tommarrow.

Called Steves Gunz today it would seem that the hole for the safety is not consistent in size from year to year, the easy fix was to turn the adapter a littel and drive the pin back in without the groove being lined up, nice and tight now. The follower was the wrong one and just needs to be swapped out. Left a message with him on his answering mach. it is nice working with someone that quickly follows up and is more than willing to help you work through the problems. Finished up with the action job now just need to put it all back together and see how she runs.

Took the peep sighted 454 to the range today, shot better with the fact. sights but not ready to give up on it yet. the action runs alot smoother now, and now after changing the ejector spring the cases just sort of dribbel out instead of shooting stright up.
