300 weatherby mag and bears
« on: January 12, 2004, 08:36:21 AM »
Up to what size bear would a .300 weatherby mag. be a good choice. I'm talking brown bears  since I assume a black bear would be no match for a properly place premium bullet. thanks

missed_shot,

While not the perfect choice the .300 Weatherby will work just fine for Brown Bears IF you do your part and put the bullet(at least a 200 gr. premium bullet(I prefer Nosler Partition)) where it needs to be.  I have taken two Brown Bears with My .300 Weatherby and while it got the job done if I go after another I plan on using my .375 Weatherby.  Just like the added security that the .375 gives.  Lawdog

I see no reason not to use the 300 Wby on any sized black bear...just use a good 180-220 gr. bullet and place it well.  Why give them a chance at all???

As for big grizz, well, I'd be a little shy to pack a 300 Wby out after one, with so many better options out there.  If I had to, I'd load something like a 200 gr. Barnes X.  A 8mm, 338, or 375 would be a much smarter choice!
