Don't know how much power your looking for...but the Bushnell 2-6 is a very good value.  Especially if ya can find one used , generally ya see them in the 125 dollar range.  Simmons makes a decent scope for low recoil handguns also...not sure about a variable though.  Check their web site.   Good luck in your quest.

I'm assuming your asking about handgun scopes ?  There's many good scopes available for rifles if thats what your asking.

No idea what your uses are, but a 2-6 would certainly be more versatile.    I've heard nothing but good about the Busnell 2-6.   A Burris 3-12 would be my choice, but they come at a price even used.    The old addage to hit small you have to aim small is spot on, and that's all about magnification even with a rimfire.

One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

A Burris would be nice, have a few already. For the cost it just isn't in the budget for a 22 that doesn't see alot of use.Only thing I heard about Bushnell is they add alot of bulk. The barrel is a super 14 22 match.Don't want to  really add more to it.Has anybody tried a Simmons varible?

It's been a while since I had one, but if I remember correctly the eye relief got really short at higher powers with my Simmons variable pistol scope.

Affordable is a relative term, but Optics Planet has a Weaver Handgun scope in 2.8-8 for around $220. I have a fixed 4X on my 14" 22LR  Match barrel, and am happy with the quality.
If you check around, you might even find one at a better price.

Look at the weaver V7 and the V9
Affordable to me, quality is similar to Leupold Var X II
V7 is 2.5-7X32 - 33mm
V9 is 3-9X38mm
I have two of the V7's and three of the V9's on my rifles
The K series of fixed sighed scopes are good too. K4   - 4X38  , K6 6X38mm

jays375,

Just a fact of life that a scope is going to add bulk and weight, and usually a variable adds more of both than a fixed version.   You have to decide whether to live with it, or without it.   My favorite EER scopes for the most powerful handcannons are about the bulkiest of all of them, the discontinued Tasco Pro Class 30mm 1.5-4X, 1X, 2X, 3X, 4X and 6X.   I learned to live with the bulk to have an excellent scope the big bruisers couldn't hurt, and I simply loved their tapered converging dot reticles.   While in the $350 range new, they can usually be bought for $75 to $150 now days.

With Burris EER's, while their new models are not as good as they once were, they are still a good deal.  You get what you pay for in scopes for the most part.   Why have a match barrel and put cheap junk on it?   Almost all of my TC barrels (and many other firearms) wore scopes that cost as much or more then the barrel/firearm itself did, for good reason.   In the long run it would be "cheaper" to save up for a quality scope.

The only Simmons variable handgun scope worth its salt IMO was the 2-7 Gold Medal, a small and compact scope that will hold up even to the recoil of the handcannons.   Not overly bright but serviceable.   But its a long discontinued model.   They do come up for sale now and then though and are usually quite reasonably priced.   I sold a bunch of them a few years ago for something like $120-$150, and some that were still new in the box for around $200.

I've heard both good and bad about the Weaver handgun scopes, although their old steel tube rifles scopes were really great scopes for the price.   The "V's" mcwoodduck mentioned are all rifle scopes, so guess he missed the "handgun" part.

Don't forget the TC variable scopes as a possibility.   I'd rather have Burris, Pro Class or certain Leupold's, but the TC's are pretty good scopes.

The Bushnell Trophy 2-6X is your best bet. This is the cheaper version, not the 3200 with the Rainguard feature and the gold lettering. Basic construction of both is the same: eye relief remains constant, clicks are positive and repeatable, and they're more than tough enough for .22's and most centerfires.

I just got a swift premier and it beats a simmons fot clarity by alot. I may put it on my 22 octagon barrel. The simmons prohunter 2-6 is ok but the eye relief is not as consistent through the different magnafications or as clear as the swift.
