357 max optics?
« on: November 06, 2011, 02:34:10 PM »
I have a 357max barrel coming...hopefully will get here tommorrow.  Was wondering what kind of optics you guys have on yours?  I have a few choices...a 4X12x40 Nikon, 6X32 leapers,3x10x50 whitetail classic.  Was even thinking of maybe a dot...but longer ranges and dots don't do well.

Have to say the Leapers.  8)  Don't really need a variable power for this chambering.  ;)

Yea I had it on my 30-30 topper, but I took it off for some reason.  Can't remember why at the moment...but yeah it is a neat little scope for a handi.  The barrel is a shorty too, so that one might be a good fit.

One of mine wears a Leupold VXII 2x7x33, Matt finished with a German #3 reticule. Mounted in matt finished Leupold PRW rings and a factory base.

My other Maxi wears a new model Redfield 2x7x33 also Matt finsihed in a one piece, matt finished, dead nutz mount.

IMHO all the scopes you listed are too big for the little Maxi...  ::) ;)

They probably are, just what I have sitting not on anything at the moment.  I am still contemplating what I want on there, just getting ideas.  I wish someone made a 3x scope with about a 75mm reticle...thatd be the stuff!

OMG I cannot even imagine that one!!

Try a quality optic, you do not "need" such a large objective with good glass to get good light transmission. My Leupold VXII 1x5 is brighter and clearer than ANY cheap scope with ANY dia objective... I'll bet my little Leupold M8 2.5X20 or my 1x4x20 VXII is too!!!

I am a firm believer in not over scoping a gun. My suggestion would be a quality fixed 4x.

I think the 6X42 Leupold was one of the greatest scopes ever made, it is just too expensive to put on everything. Also, the relative brightness of any 7mm exit pupil diameter is the same, 3X21, 4X28, 8X56 etc. I also love that German reticle. I have an old Bushnell with the post and crosshair that is similar. I have compromised with the Simmons shotgun scope, a 4X solid. They are very durable, bright, and inexpensive. I wish they made a reasonable quality solid tube 6X for $100, I know it can be done.

Mine is wearing an old 2.5X shot gun scope with cross hairs and a circle. It works great for up to 100 yards or so on deer sized game, 50 yards or so on smaller critters. I bought 2 of these scopes and wish I had bough a couple of more before they were discontinued. 5" eye relief so it sets ahead of the trigger down low. The second one sets on a Marlin 1894 44 Mag, again, ahead of the trigger.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

I have a TC 1.5-6x32 BP hunter on mine.  Eyepiece is a little large.  Nice length.

The best fixed power scopes for Handi's are the Leupold M8 4x and 6x.  Perfect size.  Have that on my 30-30.  Found used reasonable price.

Otherwise the Prodiamond 4x is great for the money and good optics

Leapers always seemed grainy to me.

I have a Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 on mine with the DOA 250 reticle. The holdovers help with longer shots. I have shot mine enough to know which dots work best for which distances. My rifle and scope combo lays them right into a 1 1/2" group at 150yds.

Thanks, Dinny

Pretty much all of my optics less the 20+ fixed powers go to field set at 6x where I sighted them in at ... That is just a good set point for identifying  antler points ( 3 point rule where we hunt ) and making shots , rarely is it called on under field condition in Arkansas to crank it up above 6x... One of my personal favorites in the "fixed power" market for moderate range calibers is the Nikon 4x ( think this was their 22 lr scope) the ones that were bought over the years went on 7.62x39,  35 rem, 30-30 and never an issue found.... No need for big glass on the Maxi, Least that is not what I myself will be using when the time comes. ;)

Got the barrel today...ended up putting it on the sb-2 frame.  I tried it on the topper frame and it locks up and fits well, but the fore-arm is a little off for some reason and I don't want to modify it to fit that barrel...it'd be sloppy on the topper barrel if I did.  I just put a Nikon Monarch 3x9x40 BDC on it.  Had that scope on the 280, but I am gonna put the 4x12 Nikon back on it.  I can't wait to shoot the Max...looks very cool with the 17 7/8 in barrel!  I just realized that my sizing die isn't a carbide die, so I'm gonna have to get one before I can do much load experimenting.  I finally loaded all of my brand new stuff. >:(
