Comments said it was showing aggressive behavior near a school. Damaged property. Police were trying to help the farmer get it back in and he decided he wanted it killed so it wouldn't hurt anyone or damage anymore property. Looks like someone would have had a shotgun to put it down quicker. Also looks like they need to visit a farm and see how to get cows up. You don't scare the heck out of them with vehicles, lights and sirens. You offer them the path of least resistance which is the open gate vs. stress of them not wanting to have you messing with them.

4 police cars and not a more effective gun to use??

say all YOU have is a .40 clock and a 12ga pump....[like most cops here]
what load do you choose?
.40 hp or fmj......12 slug to chest or head...buckshot to neck at that range

Growing up on the farm I put down a couple of steers with a .22 pistol with one shot and an instant kill. Got to know where to place the bullet, otherwise they can be a tough creature to kill quickly.

I agree with what the woman said at the end of the video. What a bunch of complete idiots.

I think it kind of runs with the crowd, cops that is. The sherriff's department here is not quite as sharp as a doorknob and I say that from two animal incidents I've been involved in with them. At least they didn't shoot any of them.

That was kind of stupid!

Trying to take down a cow with a 9mm (or whatever pistol caliber they were using).

What this video show is just a lack of training. The cops in my area are country boys, and use to dealing with this type of situation. They have ropes and lasso's in their trunks along with long arms in case they're needed. This could have been handled a lot better. No need to destroy the cow.

I hope they at least had a barbeque, if not it would have been a waste of good steaks.

Come on now. Just how often is a police officer going to get an opportunity to shoot a cow? or his pistol for that matter? When opportunity knocks you gotta answer the door.

The owner asked them to shoot it for Pete's sake.

On a sorta related note. I once called on an officer to come dispatch a deer that was laying in a Wal Mart parking lot. It had been hit by a car and was laying bawling with a broken back. Said officer showed up shot the deer "in the head". 45 minutes later the deer was just as alive as before ( obviously had missed ). So in my experience 12 shots sounds about right for a cow.

I'm kind of curious. What spot on a steer's skull can be penetrated by a .22 pistol (assuming it was a head shot)?

CASULL. My Dad used to kill them like that when he helped my Uncle butcher. 22 LR SOLIDS is what he used. I remember watching them just fold up at the crack of the rifle. Don't remember his aim point but it was frontal and never needed a followup shot.
In the video the one cop shot it from maybe 10 ft and folded a leg. Some pee poor shooting from those guys. POWDERMAN.

About 8 years ago, I witnessed a similar situation, a pal of mine who had shot a deer, called me to help him find it. I managed to follow the blood trail, until we got to the deer. It was still breathing, but unable to move. My pal, pulled our his handgun to apply the "coup de grace". He pointed the gun at the deers head, and turned away as he pulled the trigger. He missed completely from 2' away. The deer died immediately after. To this day, we still kid him about the deer dying from fright.

My brother in law on a training motor ride as the ranking officer had to put down a horse that had all legs in a cattle guard braking 2. He had the largest cal hand gun. Called a vet to to find the best shot placement. He had to surrender his gun, do all kinds of paper work, explain his actions for the shooting before he was cleared of any wrong doing. As a commander with many civilians and officers looking on.

How to kill a steer with a .22 pistol?

.22 solids aiming just above "between the eyes" with a slight downward angle if possible. Just a bit off it probably won't work well. My vet told me about driving up on an accident that involved a stock trailer. A cow was badly injured. My vet watched the trooper shoot the cow six times in the head with a .357 without killing it. My vet identified himself to the trooper who then gave his gun to him and he finished it off with one shot.

This is exactly the way it works. As a kid it was a big deal to be allowed this job when we butchered in the fall or early winter. Either sitting or standing atop the corral fence with the animal very close affords the proper angle. Never fired a second shot.

When I was a kid growing up on a farm after WW II we butchered at least one cow and one hog every fall. They were shot just a little above and right between the eyes. One shot with my dad's little Remington pump .22 was all it ever took. They would just drop straight down instantly.

I've used a 22 rifle for several cattle, a horse, and several pigs. CAUTION. One hog was about 300 lbs and I forgot I had cci stingers in the rifle. The bullet fragmented on that thick skull but never penetrated. After several shots all I got was a ticked off hog. I changed ammo and killed her with the next shot. Like with everything else, proper bullet and shot placement. I've only used the rifle, not a pistol, except for my 45 to dispatch an animal that size but am reasonably sure a pistol too would do the job. POWDERMAN.

For a cow, draw a line (visually)(or use a magic marker if ya feel ya need to) from the eye to the opposite side ear, both sides. Thats where you place the bullet. 22 rifle works just fine, never used a pistol, didn't want to get that close. Da## thing might just jump forward on you.

Well, the cow clearly refused verbal commands to Comply... so it's clear that the officer was in fear for his life - it was Officer Safety and falling back on his training that led Officer Friendly to unload on poor Elsie!
