Ear-Ache Remedy?
« on: November 08, 2011, 01:09:40 AM »
My wife has a stuffed up ear.  We are going on a trip in a few dats and she could really use to get this un-clogged before we get on a plane.  Any suggestions?

You can go to the pharmacy and get a product called an ear candle. They are a piece of linen covered in paraffin or bees wax. Heat up a little olive oil in a spoon so the cold doesn't hurt her ear. Pour in just a little in her ear and let it set there for about 5 minutes to soften up what's inside her ear. She will be laying with the bad ear facing up. Cut a hole in a towel the size of the ear candle. It is to protect here ear, hair and face from ashes that might fall off the linen candle. It is placed in the ear and lit. You hold it. It is hollow like a funnel. The vacuum created by the top burning pulls the olive oil up and the nasty stuff with it. It may get clogged with wax and have to be removed and the tip cleaned out so it can suck more out. Put in ear drops after. All the nasty buildup is her body trying to shield the eardrum from the wind or cold that is hurting it. The ear drops should have an antibiotic and oil in it to keep the wind off and clear up the irritation.
Here's a link to ear candles so you know what they look like. http://www.supersup.com/harmony-cone-medium-ear-candle-1-candle-639062912428?utm_source=google&utm_medium=pfeed&utm_campaign=639062912428&CAWELAID=914146817 Sweet oil used to be used before olive oil was popular, but sweet oil is just olive oil.

If she just has water in her ear she can hold her nose and try to blow through it. The sinuses and ear are connected so air will force the water out.

Bugflipper, If you look into it. I dont think they work. I have tried them and what is inside comes from the candle itself. What was in the ear at the start is in the ear at the end.
To better understand it go to youtube under ear cleaning.

You may be right briarpatch. The last time I had a earache I was a teenager and had to go out logging in the winter. I did the ear candles and brown stuff clogged the tube up. May come from the candle burning for all I know. Just a remedy passed down from the last generation, some work and some are wishful thinking. What got me through the week was pouring the sweet oil in there and wearing shooting muffs to keep the cold wind out.

I fought heavy earwax for years until I tried the pocket clip from a throw-away ballpoint pen.
cleans them right out.  just go easy.

For heavy earwax I use one of the old Water Picks. Fill it with half very warm water and half hydrogen peroxide. Earagate ear and you will see little pecies of wax coming out untill ear is clean. Causion use at own risk!
RIP Mike. Died on July 14th, around 2am, with his family at his side, he went peacefully to be with god.

We heated mineral oil gently in a water bath and have them lay on their side with the bad ear up.  Use an eye dropper and slowly add warm mineral oil until the canal is filled.  Can be a little discomfort at first, but usually starts feeling better almost immediately.  Once it starts to cool, have them sit up with a wash cloth over the ear and lean the other way letting the oil drip out.  ;)  If the other ear hurts also, repeat on the other side.  Repeat as needed.  Gets rid of most ear aches from congestion etc, fast.  ;)

If the problem is due to an infection, I'll tell you how my mother cured my sister when we were kids.
First off, my sister didn't know about the "medicine". One ear drum had burst, and she was in a lot of pain. Nothing was working, so Mom got ahold of
Granny to see if she knew any home remedy. She did. My sister says the pain was gone immeadiately, and her other ear drum didn't pop. It was a mild antiseptic. Quite a natural product. Your wife won't want to know about it, but its simple: an eyedropper of fresh warm urine.   :P     -for what its worth.

I have heard that urine is antiseptic, as long as there is no infection in the 'donor'.  It's useful as a wound wash if you are cut bad in the woods.  So I'm told anyway.

my doctor told me to NEVER put anything into an ear if your having problems. It could be infected and you could make things drasticaly worse. Go and see your doctor or at least get a recomendation from a pharmisist. Not someone on a gun fourm.

I agree with going to the Dr.
And while working in a Dr's office one day the Dr stopped by and got to talking sports etc . One of the guys on the crew had heard about the urine in the ear and ask the Dr. His reply was it should/could work . BUT it could also introduce othere problems .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I have personnaly used two methods not mentioned here...may sound strange but they work.

1. Place a lit cigarette into the ear...not all the way in. Just make sure it is sealed in the canal. It will pull the junk right out.

2. Take a full sheet of newspaper and make a large funnel out of it. Place the smallest opening into the ear and light the larger side on fire. It will create a vacuum and have the same effect as the previous method.

Go ahead and make faces...somebody will try it (or maybe have) and validate me!

Cheers!
