NULA ultralight rifles
« on: November 08, 2011, 02:40:36 AM »
Greeting from Alaska,

I think winter is here in the great land.... Anyway anybody own & hunt with a NULA rifle in any caliber? These are the Melvin Forbes ultralight rifles that he builds in W.V.   :) They are hand made by Forbes patterened after the remington m700.  :o

Are they worth the money?

I don't own one as I don't really want an ultra light rifle but yes they are worth the price. Forbes is coming out with a production rifle he doesn't assemble in WV and it's not an ultra light for around the same money as a Kimber. Seems like there's an article on it in the last NRA American Rifleman magazine. I know at least one gun writer urged him to make a production rifle done right with nothing to be done to it but mount a scope.

I've read a lot of reviews of them and never yet seen anything negative about them. I'd love to have one but really feel the lightness of them is a negative as is the price.

Now if he makes one at a price point similar to the Kimber that shoots as accurately as the light guns and weighs in more like a normal rifle he might can sell me one.

My personal rimfire is a MR clone of the 10-22 with a Hogue stock and carbon-graphite wrapped barrel. I doubt it weighs 4 pounds. Ya can't get much lighter. It is also very accurate.

Forbes has always made a good rifle and he was the first to make a custom light rifle.  I was surprised when I heard about him making a production rifle figured he had enough of that when he sold his Ultra Light company to Colt and all the problems with that deal.  I was sorry to see that he couldn't use the old company name but at least he got back into the business.

My wife shoot a Forbes model 24 in 280AI nice rifle Mel good guy to work with and rifle is well balanced that we have.  I wasn't price shopping when we got the Forbes rifle so that wasn't part of the decision to get it.

Bill,

He makes the lightweights in rimfire as well.

Regards,

Not only are they fairly light, Melvin says every one of them will shoot 2/10" groups at 50 yds. or better too!

Here's one of them in LH,  (the safety has been removed)

The quality of Melvins guns is some of the best i've seen, and his 22's are absolutely the best i've ever had in my hands.

The NULA seems to have a reputation as being done right.  That it will be accurate for sure they say!

As for myself I want lightweights and the Kimbers do that for me.  It seems that not everyone can get them to shoot as well as they like.

I also like the design of the Kimbers better what with their superb M70 type safety and control round feed.

At 5.8 pounds wow what a boat anchor.  ;D

My Magnum Research Model 17-22 in 22LR weights only 5.5 pounds with magazine in place as well as a Leupold 2-7 scope mounted in all steel Burris Zee rings and with scope covers in place.

Seriously the NULA guns are really well made but in the centerfire rounds I don't want a rifle that light, my shoulder is too far gone for that. Now in a rimfire I do like lightweight and mine is the lightest rifle I'm aware of on the market today. I never weighted it bare but I'd not bet the old Nylon 66 at four pounds was any lighter.

I dont know if they are worth the money, depends on your perspective I guess, if its not a financial strain  it may be worth every penny. for me, I cant afford to shell $3k for a rifle so no not to me, my savage 110 does fine.

would I like to have one,  Oh yes, in 260/7-08 with a top quality low/mid power optic 1.5x5 or 2x7 it would take game as far as Im willing to shoot.  but thats nearly 4k for the complete rig, I can buy a lotta guns for 4k that may not be as light but will do perfectly well.

Well, Melvin said it's no problem building one lighter, BUT he says, it's as light as you can make them (22 LR) and get that 2/10" or better accuracy...

One thing about it, it ballances perfectly, and it feels lighter than it is.  Also it's slim and trim, it reminds me of the old Rem. 581's...

The action locks up like a CF, with locking lug, 54* bolt lift and bbl. that is threaded in.  The trigger can be set at 2oz. if you like, for bench rest shooting, and it comes "bedded" in a carbon fiber/kevlar stock (that's not slipery) painted the way you want it, comes with scope rings/mounts and a hard case.

The stock was designed by Melvin and he builds/paints them in house!

If you send Melvin a scope, your rifle will come to you with the scope mounted and sighted in.  The rings/mounts are "Tally" that Melvin designed long ago and sold the design to Tally, they are light and very strong.

Within a couple months, Melvin will have a "production" rifle out, and it will loose some of the options he offers, and will sell for less than half of his custom built models...

Savage has a new lightweight out, it's pretty light even though they had to chop half of the gun away to get the "light". lol

I really like a light weight rifle, and as i don't need huge cartridges/calibers to get the job done, so a 257 Roberts would work just fine for me, and be low in recoil.

The NULA with the Timney trigger does have a 3 position safety...  I've never needed a 3 position safety so it's no loss to me.  I chose to have my 22 built with a Jewell trigger, 2 position safety...
