A .410 wouldn't be my first choice for deer, but it obviously works for him (and many others also) so I won't argue with success!

As far as accuracy using a full choke, it all depends on the gun and the gun/load combo.  When it comes to slug accuracy or buckshot/birdshot patterns there's just no way to predict how a certain combo will work.  It's more like voodoo than science!

I started with a full choke .410 as a youngster.  It kicked like a savage to me then, but I could hit an oil can 2 outta 3 shots at 15 yards.  ;)  Was all the more accuracy testing I needed then.  ;)  lol

Doc,

I had a 25.5" full choke 410 Pardner for my son to play with about 15 years ago.  He could keep the winchester 2.5" 410 slugs on a pie plate @ 50 yards, with just the front bead for a sight.  We never used it for deer hunting as he graduated to a 20 ga when he was old enough to hunt.

I used to hunt with a fellow who had a Browning Light 12 ga with a long (28 or 30 inch?) full choke barrel and he was deadly on deer out to about 80 yards with the old Remington foster slugs.    I think the choke affect is all dependant on the gun, the ammo and the shooter and will be different with each combination.  If a 410 for deer keeps a little one from developing a flinch then that would be enough for me.

I always thought it best to go cylinder bore if the intent is to shoot slugs.. (I planned on lopping 3" off a certain .410 bbl at one time myself  ;) )...

but, that said.. i found plenty of people shooting winchester and remington slugs out of their full and modified choke guns (several different manufacturers) claiming they have never had a problem..

Im GUESSING that going cylinder bore wouldnt hurt accuracy.. just dont know if it would actually improve it (guess it depends on the gun, and how the choke is squeezing on the slugs as they pass through.. )..

I wanted to go to 18 1/2" on that .410 I mentioned as much to shorten the OAL of the gun and make it "handi'er" for the kid that would be shooting it, as much as I wanted to try to improve accuracy with slugs.. (double motivation)

I have a full choke 410 barrel I bought here on GBO that was D&T with a scope rail. Put a red dot on it. shoots 2-3" groups at 50 yards. Can't hunt deer with anything smaller than a 20ga here in New York, Just wanted to see how well it would throw slugs.

My girlfriend is going to use a full choked 410 with Brenneke slugs this year. It's plenty accurate at 25 yards which is as far as she wants to shoot.

I had a youth 410 Pardner for my kids. Pretty inaccurate with the full choke. I had the choke bored out to not quit cyl bore. Drilled and tapped and put it on a surviver stock with a short 4X scope. I could hit a pie plate every shot at 75y. Reloaded 3" brass shells with 41 mag light bullets. Killed a few with it. Traded it in for twice what I had in it.

A lady who works as a dental tech at the local dentist office, her son killed a 240 lb. 13 point buck with a full choke 410 last year. Shot was about 60-70 yards and deer ran about 10 yards and fell dead. This was the only gun he had, and it was borrowed.

His mom was going deer hunting, and he finally decided he'd go to, and used a borrowed 410. I am impressed with 410's after talking "bad" about them for years. Here, in last few years, I've shot lots of them. Matter of fact, the 10" T/C
will kill squirrels, rabbits, etc. just as good as anything. Have made some amazing shots with this handy lil gun.

Best,

My son bang flopped a hefty 4 point mule buck two years ago at 60 yards with his full choke handi 410. The pic is posted somewhere here on GB.  This year he took a forked horn out of the same stand about 45 yards. It went about 30 yards run/falling. That was a lung shot and the slug punched right threw. What was cool was when we were draggin the buck back to the truck, he dropped his end and dumped a cotton tail about 20 yards out with another slug. :) I need to keep a eye on that kid before there is a critter shortage in my happy hunting grounds

I've shot the Remington slugger's and winchester's out of full choke topper 410 many many times. They shoot pretty good and I would not have a problem hunting with these slugs. scout4<><
