Contender rifle in 22mag
« on: November 09, 2011, 02:10:23 AM »
Good morning all,

I've been wanting a new 22mag rifle to shoot & hunt with but I don't like bolt guns. I want the most accurate rifle I can buy. Got to thinking maybe a 22mag barrel for one of my contender frames might be the way to go.  ;)

Any experiences or opinions about the 22mag in a contender rifle..?

Regards,
Byron

Byron,
I managed to pick up a Custom Shop "Super 16" in 22mag and it's an excellent shooter.  I don't have many barrels, but this is probably my favorite.  I couldn't tell you grouping size on paper, but I have no problem shooting squirrels in the eye when my 3-9x40 can find the eye.  Definitely a fun caliber for plinking, small game and varmint hunting and will be the rifle that my children will probably learn on when they are old enough.
Hope this helps.

Byron,

"I want the most accurate rifle I can buy"

If a rimfire is what you want to fill that want (on your Contender or otherwise),  the 17HMR far outshines the 22MAG (and the 17HM2 the 22LR) in precision (accuracy) FWIW.

I got the entire drift of your post, but quoted and replied to the important part.

I have an H&R 22 Mag single shot that is a blast to shoot.  I have a 223 in a contender and it is really short.  It is great for what I want it for but I do better with the longer barrel and larger rifle.  If you are looking for a 22 Mag barrale I would get or order a 20" bull if you can find one for your contender.
On a note on what Ladobe said.  I have a 17HMR and it is a lazer.  I use it when I have rocks in a semi populated area.  less zing factor than the 22 LR.
The new 22 Mag bullets in the 30 grain to 34 grain are fantastic and will do everything that the 17 will do and more.

Do you guys really think a 17HMR would be suitable for Florida hogs??  :o
Whatever i get has to work for them too.

I've got a 16" 45Colt barrel from the custom shop that is pretty sweet and fun to shoot!  Would work great on those hogs, but might be overkill for linking and varmints... ;)

I say good luck and a 22 mag is definately a better choice for florida hogs. A 22hornet would be a better choice but a 22 mag will work fine if you take your time and make a good shot.
